Thank you all for the well wishes. Just to add I normally ski with my cell phone as a good way to keep in touch with my family. Unfortunately I forgot it in the truck that morning and did not go back to get it. I parent by example and if my kids have to wear helmets well you can bet I have one on as well. That goes with seat belts too. Even with a helmet on if I had hit my head on that tree then I honestly think I would not be here today.
carey: Thank you so much for your role as a ski patroller. The quality of care I had received on the hill was exceptional. I was so relieved to see them arrive.

Thank you Don for sharing your story. I too love to ski and have done so for 30+ years. I'm glad to hear it wasn't worse than it was. We've lost very seasoned instructors to head injuries on the runs here in one of our local hills. Heal well and enjoy that Whitehawk this Summer. Travel safely.

glad your going to be OK. F1 racing legend Michale Schumaker did something very similar this past winter and is still in an induced coma.. Last I heard every time they try to wake him up something happens and they have to put him under again...

Wooo weee! That was (is) an ordeal! Your attitude and outlooks are really positive.

In 2005 I had two spine surgeries within 3 months. Not the same injury as you but I can definitely sympathize as to the tough road of recovery on a major structural part of the body.
What I learned from the 1 year plus recovery is that the mental component to healing is just as tough as healing physically. Be gentle with yourself and try not to rush into doing too many activities once you do start making progress with walking, etc. in the months to come. I was on a walker for 12 weeks. It sounds like you have a wonderful support system in your family, and that will carry you over the long haul of challenging days ahead.

Again thanks for all the well wishes. Since I first posted I have had some pretty tough days. My back pain was so bad that I ended up in the ER. Repeat x-rays showed I have a compression fracture to my L1 and fractures to the transverse processes on my L2-3. This would explain the severe pain I had been having since the accident and that the fractures were missed on the first round of x-rays. Again I am so lucky that there was no cord damage or surgery required and that I should expect to have a full recovery. I delayed the pick up of my new Whitehawk till after the long weekend in May as I hope to be walking and mobile without crutches by then. My family and I are getting excited for that day and are continuing our trip planning. Thanks again for the support and well wishes it is very much appreciated.
