Metal valve stems

Getting new tires and going up a load range to D. I want to put in metal valve stems but I am not sure which ones to get for my basic white steel wheels. Any suggestions?

I purchased mine at Advance auto Parts. They were in a 2 pack and had a adapter that would allow it to fit the hole on the rim. They were less than $6 for the 2 pack.

One thing we have noticed metal stems don't seem to lose much air over time!

I suggest you do not buy your own stems let the tire dealer do it, if you get a bad leaking stem you cannot blame the installer.

Metal stems are the way to go because you will need them if you install tire sensors.

Having a buddy do it off the clock. He works at a Chevy dealership. Just trying to figure hole diameter size.

Most of the valve stems come with 2 rubber washers. One for each of the 2 standard sizes. There may be an oddball out there but most are standardized.

My local tire shops do not stock metal valve stems regularly. The first time I went I asked for them and they scrounged up 4 stems but they were 3 different kinds. Since then I just buy my own and bring them to the tire place or I just do it myself at home.

I have never seen a tire shop that stocked metal stems. They will order them and have them delivered from the same place I got mine. At least the ones I frequent.

I would suggest if you go that route, notify them ahead of time to prevent delays. Also get a few spares. I would use the shortest one you can get. Mine are 1 inch.

My local Discount Tire stocks them. They installed them at no additional charge when I bought my trailer tires there.

X3, They hold the air in much better. During the last two years, I have only topped off my tires once a year, compared to weekly with the OEM stems.

I bought “Slime” brand at autozone. Came with two sizes of rubber washers and rated for 110 psi. I changed them myself using a HF tire changer. Be careful not to cross thread them and I tightened them till the washer was compressed slightly

Here is a pic. They came with washers to fit 2 different std rim holes and are 1 1/4” long.

Update on metal valve stems

A few months ago, I traded in my old TST RV510 pressure monitors for a 507 system. I found that the metal valve stems at 1 1/4 inch , pictured in the previous post, were just a tad to short for the 507 sensors. It seems that the threads on my existing stems were not deep enough to allow the locking washer that goes below the sensor and the threads on the sensor to lock together as they should on some wheels. I worked around this by simply leaving the bottom locking nut off and all worked well.
When I change tires, I plan to purchase some metal valve stems that have a little more thread on them.

I use a non-chain tire store in Albuquerque that mostly services trucks. He bought the metal stems and installed them. I do not recall the price of the stems, but they were not cheap. He charged $10 or $15 to install on each tire. I was happy and still am....

Are these valve stems going on trailer wheels ?
Or, are you working on a Class A or C with dual wheels on the rear ?

There are lots of options for metal valve stems for inner wheels on dualies but you probably won't find them as in stock items except maybe at a place that services RVs.
