The Things We See On The Road

There are times when we all are witness to unusual sightings in our travels.

On our recent trip South, DW and I saw a very large motorhome, towing a pickup truck and a boat behind the pickup!

This was in Florida, on southbound interstate 95, South of Jacksonville.

I wish I would have grabbed my cell to get a pic, but to paraphrase Toby, I'm not as fast as I once was.

Is this really a thing? My limited Google search shows that it's not legal, at least on the East Coast.

Hope he never has to back up. Or go through a toll booth. Or under a security gate, or....

Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

That's not uncommon in Michigan. In fact, it's legal. It has to be under 59' in length, the first trailer has to be a 5th wheel and the driver has to pass a test. It earns him or her a "recreational double" endorsement on their drivers license. Here's more...

" Under Michigan law, the total length of the three units constituting the "recreational double"--that is to say, the pickup truck, the fifth-wheel trailer, and the second trailer--when coupled together cannot exceed 59 feet. Further, the gross weight of the second trailer cannot exceed the empty weight either of the truck, or of the fifth-wheel trailer, and the loads being hauled must be balanced. The law also specifies how hitches must attach the components and the manner in which electric brakes on the trailer must operate, and it requires that the trailer be attached in such a way that it does not drift more than three inches to either side of the path of the towing vehicle."

Some states allow towing of a trailer by a trailer behind a vehicle. Pennsylvania does not.

In Florida triple towing is not legal. At some point I suspect a camera will catch it. And mail a ticket quietly.

Once I was behind a car with a six foot tall teddy bear strapped by one strap to a roof. Car had Joisey plates Periodically the airflow would cause Teddy to sit up. Was just creepy!.

Nope, pretty much ignored by LEO as we see it all the time, especially if the driver is from a state that allows it. FL loves tourists and their $$$$.

Living a few miles from an I-95 interchange in Southeast GA, I see it all the time. Folks with GA and FL plates mostly. Usually it is 5th wheel owners towing a boat or a golf car behind the 5er.

If one of those folks doing it gets into or causes an accident, it might pop up on some LEOs' radar, but seems to be ignored for now.

MN it is legal. Only with 5th wheel in the middle and a 70 foot max of all 3. I used to do it with a small single Jetski. I could only see it when turning.

Good times!! LOL I work for an electric utility. Those things you see in your driveway keep us busy during storms.

The things we see on the road?

Besides road kill how about lots of mattresses, ladders and once in a while a plastic propane bottle cover?

Good eye! Yes it is. A few days earlier my buddy's truck, the one we were in when the pic was taken, got t-boned HARD. We had reservations at Holiday Shores and weren't going to let a wrecked truck stop us. His DW and son rode with us and he pulled their 5er solo, just in case something bad happens. He and I went truck shopping at the Chevy dealer and saw that. I HAD to get a pic of that one. Lol!

Thought that was Lennon, just a few miles from me. Pretty sure that’s my Heating and Cooling companies owner. It’s called Hi Temp and they always have some lifted and modified toys in front of their shop. Lol, small world, and now, just like Paul Harvey, you know the rest of the story!
