removing mirror from bathroom

hi all! what is the best way to remove the mirror that is attached to the wall in the bathroom? I I want to add a medicine cabinet for more storage. I assume it's glued on in some fashion.

People have had good luck by sliding fishing line down the back and cutting the glue with that.

Like colby mentioned, monofilament fishing line, or you might try some strong dental floss. You should find that the mirror is attached with double-sided tape. Several have used this method successfully.

X2 on the fishing line, wrapped around a couple of dowel rods to use as handles. Screw drivers can damage the wall if your not careful.

If you go the fishing line route and if you need to purchase some fishing line, buy the braided fishing line as it will cut better. 20lb test should work well. ~CA

I used a heat gun to GRADUALLY heat the mirror, while gently applying pressure to one end of the mirror to pry it off the wall. When the glue on the double sided tape softened, the mirror came away from the wall. Just be careful not to heat the wall too much or the glue that adheres the vinyl wall covering to the will soften and pull away from the wall.

The whole process took less than 5 minutes.

Years back they used to un-attach themselves and fall. I believe I would try the heat gun gently or a combo of both methods If the mirror breaks, you aren't planning to use it again anyhow.

For sure put a drop cloth under the area just in case.

removing mirror

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. One question: does a blow hair dryer get hot enough? Heat gun is buried in storage.

Maybe, maybe not. My wife's current hair dryer won't, but my heat gun would.

No on the hair dryer. We used the heat gun; got it at Amazon for $20. I've used it for removing rusty bolts, defrosting, frozen pipes, and removing decals/stickers. Very handy to have around.

Yes, a heat gun, not a hair dryer. If that doesn't work try a brick and a putty knife

I have used a hair dryer to soften adhesive when I didn't have my heat gun available. The main point is to heat up the mirror without heating up the wall behind it. Apply steady pressure from under the mirror with a putty knife at least 2" wide so you don't damage the wall covering. As the glue on the double sided tape softens, the mirror will start to come away from the wall. Just don't hurry it along too much or the mirror will break.

You will have remnants of the tape left to deal with but it's not a big deal, especially if you are planting a medicine cabinet over the spot. Goof Off will help with the residual glue.

A suggestion... put painter's tape/masking tape over all of glass on the mirror. If it does break, a lot less chance of injury...and easier to clean up...

That's a pretty good idea. 💡
