Replacing under bed area with dresser

I have the classic lift the heavy bed to access the area underneath problem. I've upgraded the pistons and readjusted them but we still cringe each time we need to get something out.

But I have a garage full of tools and an idea.

I'm planning on removing the three bed support walls and adding two 18" deep "dressers" with drawers opening towards the outside walls and leave a 17" or so open area down the middle for totes. Seems like simple construction with 3/4" plywood for the box and 1/2" for the drawers. I am also considering eliminating the drawers on my side because I use packing cubes and a couple shelves would function fine and the area is hidden from view.

Anything that I should be thinking of? I know I'll have to block the area from the pass through. The bonus will be a sturdier bed platform and no more lifting.

Be sure to take pictures and show your progress.
Alternatively, have you thought about an electric lift system. Basically a 12 volt motor that pushes the bed up with a screw. Looking at doing that as I switched to a Zinus memory mattress which is much heavier and propping up the bed is getting old. (me too)

I thought of a power solution but haven't investigated it. I make a lot of saw dust so that's usually the approach I take. But that does sound interesting.
