1st time Ram Cummins Filter Change

I'm going to do my 1st oil/fuel change in my new to me 2020 Ram 3500 Cummins 6.7 HO.

Does anyone have a recommendation on filters? I'm not picky, I'm willing to go OEM or aftermarket. I see a set of OEM Mopar for a $110, and others for as low as $35 (same kit, both oil and fuel). With many options in between.

What do you recommend?

Also how often should you drain the water separator between fuel filter changes?

I've always run Fleetguard or Mopar filters on my Cummins trucks.

Fleetguard or Mopar. They are high quality, no warranty issues.

You have a water sensor, if that ever trips an alarm you should drain it. 76,000 miles, never noticed any water.

My understanding the water separator is integrated into the fuel filter near the fuel tank.

Go to Doc's Diesel for the filters. Half the price of Mopar or fleetguard. I made the switch last year and have had no issues. You have two fuel filters. Be warned that a gorilla at the factory installed them as they will be tight.

For the oil filter, there are a couple of youtube videos out there on how to change out from the top. Going in from the side will be messy. No option from the bottom.

I take mine to the dealer, and it is embarrassing how much they charge. last change Mopar recommended some sort of fuel system cleaning, I think it was, and the total charge for the whole thing was beyond embarrassing.

The stealership is ridiculous. I have been changing my own since purchased at half the cost. A little time consuming but easy to do. My dealership didn't know that two fuel filters existed on the truck when I checked them out for parts cost. I had to send them pictures to prove them wrong.

Where are you seeing both fuel filters and an oil filter for $ 35?

Amazon, I'll log in on the pc later, and see I can find a link. Brand name started with a K, and I guess was 5-6 letters long.

I would stay away from Amazon. Lots of horror stories from cheap knock offs. Either pay full price for Mopar or fleetguard or check out Doc's.

Love Genos but the filter prices and cost shipping is too much. I still get my other parts from them.

WIX Filters...all I've ever used. A bit pricey but read the comparisons. They make most of NAPA's filters also.

X2, Wix are a high quality filter. OEM is my first choice.

Yes, it is. There is a little valve on the fuel filter under the bed that you can drain any water out of. There is an alarm that will activate if it senses water in the fuel, alerting you to go crack that valve and dump the water out. I've never noticed water and never gotten an alarm.

I use Mopar for all three filters (oil & fuel) and get them off Amazon for half of dealer cost. I used a Wix fuel filter one time and had a fuel leak that required a new filter to fix. Not sure if it was installer error or a bad rubber gasket, propably the later because the leak didn’t appear until a few thousand miles. I’ve never had leak issues with the Mopars

There are many fakes on Amazon...I and others have been burnt by "Tasty Deals" sellers etc. buying fuel filters there.

Highly recommend not doing this unless you are buying from a a dealer like Athens Dodge etc.

The Mopars I buy on Amazon are from the Mopar Store who is an authentic Mopar parts dealer.. Never had problems with them. The WIX I also got on Amazon seemed a little cheap in quality compared to the Mopar.. i’ll be sticking with the Mopars and make sure I’m getting them from an actual Mopar parts house. The WIX came from Docs Diesel store. I remember the box had the CE label meaning it came from China. I think you’re right about fakes. can’t trust anything coming from China
