I read in another forum about the payload packages on the F-150's. That when a payload package is chosen for the truck, the truck is made with a heavier frame. If I recall this person said they spoke with Ford and there are 3 different frame thicknesses available for the F150, paired in combination with the payload build.

I have heard of 2 different frame thicknesses for sure I’m sure there’s 3. The max trailer tow package I believe does come with a beefier frame. As I understand it the cab configuration in conjunction with the max tow package also factors into what frame is used.

You can get the payload package, add aftermarket overload leaf springs, add HD shocks, replace the sway bars with oversized sway bars, add a Shocker hitch head, etc. You’ll be out of pocket several grand and at the end of the day still have a half ton truck that probably costs near or as much as a 3/4 ton lol. 😂

I'm familiar with door jamb stickers, they didn't used to have payload on them.

I would say the numbers are bang on.

The F-250 has a derated GVWR on it, for registration purposes. You could get a higher rating, and pay the higher registration fees.

The F-250 is capable of more, but if you don't pay, you don't get to play. DOT only cares what you paid for (the rating on the door sticker).

If I was buying an f250 to tow a 5er, I would get the higher payload package, or get an F350. Saving a couple hundred $$ on registration isn't worth having the lower payload.

I'm currently shopping for a new TV. A Ford sales rep told me they discontinued the "payload package" on the F150 (there is no brochure for 2024). Searching the web I found a statement by a Ford corporate rep stating exactly that, and saying if you want more payload buy a bigger truck.

Good to hear. I’ll admit I used to be a fan of the payload package but I realized no matter what factory suspension upgrades you get it’s still going to be a half ton truck.

10,000 gvwr

Your F-250 has a 10,000 pound GVWR. Manufacturers produce that rating specifically for licensing reasons. Some states (like here in California), charge ridiculous registration rates no matter what size of pickup because they are always considered commercial vehicles. Every pickup, even Mavericks and the like, pay weight fees. There is a difference in fees between 10,000 and 12,400 (my F-350’s GVWR), but it’s not that much, however; many states have HUGE registration fee increases when a truck’s rating is over 10,000 pounds.
Can you safely carry more in that truck than 10,000 pounds? Maybe?
Can you legally carry more in that truck than 10.000 pounds? Definitely not.
