Breakaway brake controller cable

Hubby and I reading instructions on our controller. Says not to attach to tow ball/hitch or chain clips. So where/how should we attach to our tow vehicle? It’s quite a long cable.

The eyes you hook the chain clips too is OK, not the chain clips itself. The idea is when it comes of the coupler that the pin gets pulled, or when the hitch pin is gone and the whole hitch comes out. Hope you get the idea....

In short, some part of the tow vehicle that would still be part of the tow vehicle if the hitch broke from the tow vehicle.

That way the cable would be pulled and actuate the trailer brakes.

Thank you! I went and looked at the eyes where the chains go. And now I have the whole picture. Would attaching the breakaway cable to the eye with a small carabiner do the job? Easy to hook up and remove.

I use a small carabiner on my brake cable, run it thru the eye hole and then clip it over the brake cable itself, it will tighten up against the eye on the hitch itself.

Like someone said, i wouldnt attach it to anything that has to do with towing... Attavh it to the underside of your vehicle somewhere that has nothjng to do with the hitch or chains.

I ordered one of these coilled cables with a D-RING for my Breakway switch setup.

Google image

My breakaway cable was long like shown in this photo and the coiled one idea works perfect for me. I use the D-RING to clip into a hole found on the rear frame cross member next to the welded-in trailer hitch housing. Actually I leave the D-RING mounted to the rear frame and just remove the loop from it when I unhook...

I guess it works ok - sure did resolve the problem I had of dragging my long breakaway cable I was using... The D-RING is very easy to hookup...

Mine is hooked to my 5th Wheel hitch. That is the best place to attach it. If the hitch came out of the truck, do you really think the pin wouldn't get pulled??

The key is the brake cable has to be a little shorter than your length of chains when the chains are pulled tight.
If your brake cable is longer, if there is a failure, you chains are suppose to hold the trailer, but the brake cable will not pull out because the chains aren't long enough to let the cable get taught to pull the pin.

Caution, if you have it too tight, then it might pull out on tight turns.
