CO/LP detector bites the dust

My 2 year old CO/LP detector started alarming on our last trip. I verified that the unit is failed. I called Safe-T-Alert thinking I was going to get another as it was new from them 2 years ago.
Sorry they said, it should last for 5 years but we now only warranty them for one year.

I'm done with them forever and now looking for a replacement from a more reputable company.

Anyone have any new sources?

That works great for C02 but what do you use for propane detection?

I may have to end up with 2 separate alarms but this is a crazy expense that never seems to end. I have one in my house that has worked faithfully for 10+ years.

When my last one started alarming, I purchased an ac powered combo from Lowes that used a 9v battery for backup. We have used it when the unreliable/ overpriced Safe-T-Alert fails regularly.

My CO detector is beeping when it feels like it, I don't think it has a propane alarm? My unit is 2013, so if it has bitten the dust, so be it. It is the hard wired one and I wondered if we had to have a hard wired one? I will be boondocking and may lose battery, so it wouldn't work anyway. Is there a reason why these things are hard wired?

Look around in a home store, they have a much better selection than they did in the past. I even saw one with a 10 year battery but it was a LP alarm, not a combo LP/ CO.

The first one lasted not quite the 5 years it was suppose to, and I believe their programmed to alarm at 3:00 in the morning!! I couldn't get it to silence for more than a couple of minutes. We were at a one-night stop over on a trip south, so no propane on. Pulled out the Leatherman, and cut the wires. We now have a spare with us in the TT for the next time...and there will be a next time!

Next time I need one, this will be it. I am going to get away from those expensive non warranty ones that come in the rig.

I have on like that plugged into a socket in the bedroom. The two problems with it is:

#1 It's high up off the floor...should be at floor level to be 100% effective;

#2 It works on 120 volts so it's useless without AC power.

My factory detector is two years old now and working fine and when its time is up I'll replace it with a similar 12 volt model.

OK, that's it with the LP/CO alarms. Mine just gave up the ghost and I just replaced in in the last couple of years. I'm done with that drill, too expensive.

I already have a ac with battery backup model in the rig for this occasion and I have bought my last one from the company that makes them for the industry. I did install a small switch to keep from scaring the dogs and us when it was time, so silencing it was no problem. Removing it shortly until I can find one with a warranty.

I still have the original LP/CO combo detector in my trailer, and it was built end of 2012. This spring when I de-winterized it and installed the batteries, the detector came to life and started beeping and showing the end of life sequence of beeps/lights. I thought, hey, not too bad considering they're only supposed to last 5 years... and then a few minutes later, the thing sorted itself out and went back to ready/serviceable status and it's been fine ever since.

And I know it's working properly too, since my friggin wife sprayed aerosol dry shampoo all over her hair inside the trailer a few weeks ago and the detector was just as unhappy about it as I was. At least it's long and blonde..... LOL

They are a necessary evil, but like babies they usually pop out in the middle of the night!

They must've made them really good in '12 as I still have the original in my camper as well and it's functioning properly. Thinking this thing can't last, I purchased a backup a couple of years ago and now I'm thinking my original may outlast the backup.

Guess what? I went out there to remove it and powered it back up to see how long before it alarmed and went back 1/2 hour later and it was not in alarm.

I guess I'll leave it until it fails again. We are not in it.

From what I have read I would not use a home CO detector in an RV. They are rated conditioned and unconditioned space to work safely. I forget which is which but I wont use a home monitor in the RV as they are not rated properly.
