Is anyone towing one of these "half-ton towable" fifth wheels with an actual 1/2 ton? LOL

We have been all over the place trying to decide whether to upgrade our trailer to a 5th wheel. But we are really hesitant to also upgrade our 2010 F-150 Lariat because it's a great truck, with very low mileage (just 42000 KM or 26000 miles). It's got lots of life left it in it and new trucks are atrociously expensive. Yet I can't seem to find a used 250 or 350 that doesn't have a ton of mileage on it. GRRR

So I've been looking at these HT models and wonder if our F150 could handle it. We have a 5.4 litre V8 and a 3:73 rear axle. Any advice?

I had a 5.4L in my last 3/4 ton. It pulled our last fifth wheel ok (it was slightly lighter than our current HT trailer). Not great but it didn't struggle. Being that your F150 is about 1000-1500lbs lighter I think than my F250 was it should be similar. I wouldn't hesitate if you really want a HT. Constant mountain towing would be a different story (don't know what it's like where you camp or live)

IMO, It would depend on what trailer your looking at.

I've towed heavy equipment all over East Tennessee for about half of my life. We have A bigger Eagle HT 29.5 BHDS. I pull it with my old F250 fine, But I don't think I'd want to hook to it with a half ton.....JMO from a guy that's pulled a few loads.

The towing capacity is starting to get up there in these newer trucks though. A lot of the newer half tons are about what my old 3/4 ton diesel is.

Not trying to change anyone's mind on old trucks, but I bought my Ford Superduty with well over 200,000 miles on the clock. I send a sample in with every oil change and it's still rock solid. Maybe I got one in a million but the saving grace for us is that I wouldn't be able to be RVing if not for good used equipment.

I have a 2015 Eagle HT 27.5 RLST ando I pull it with my Ram 1500. The Ram is a HEMI and pulls with out any problems. I like the combination lots of power.

We have the 23.5RBS which is the smallest HT but we also pull our 17' boat behind it as well. I wouldn't want to pull it in the mountains all the time but here in the upper midwest our F150 with 3.73's does just fine. Next TV will probably be a 3/4 or 1 ton but we probably will be getting a bigger 5th wheel then too.

200k on one of those isnt bad. Got a 99 with a tick over 400K on it, still
runs just as good as my 02 with 170k on it.

What's wrong with the FBS? lol.....we just got our 24FBS and love it. Good luck on your search.

Nothing wrong with it, per say. Just a few things now know we want in our next unit:
1. A regular sized queen bed. My husband is 6'3 and he finds the RV queen to be a challenge.
2. A floor plan where the bathroom is beside the bedroom and not at the other end. I know it's only a few more steps away, but I have one of those bladders that has me up several times a night to pee and I want the potty as close as I can! LOL
3. Recliners. Again, we like that there is a couch and a dining set in the 24FBS and that the couch faces the TV (another must for us), but its a tiny couch and we find it cramped when the two of us are on it.
4. A regular sized shower, rather than that little tub thing.
5. Just generally more room. We travel with an 80lb golden retriever who has to be in the trailer if we are in the trailer. Otherwise he whines and gets all upset. We just found it got a little tight in there! (although he did find a nice spot under the dinette to lie down in an attempt to stay out of the way!)

Having said all that, I would still highly recommend the 24FBS to anyone. It does have nice floor plan, but like many others, as much as we really like some of its features, there are definitely things we would change in our next unit.

In looking at our truck's specs again I just realized that we have the max towing package. Not quite the super duty package, but it does mean our max payload is 1810 lbs and max towing is 11,300.

For some reason, I had the numbers confused and thought our max payload was lower -- likely was mixing this truck up with our previous super cab.

Yes, new trucks are expensive, but with your low low miles your truck is worth a ton on trade. So the difference is prolly not that much. Doesn't cost a penny to find out.

No, look at your door jamb sticker. It tells you what your payload is... not the towing guide. Also, the 11,300 max iswith an empty truck with one driver... no passengers, no cargo, and not evena cup of coffee in the cupholder.

Take into consideration that the fiver hitch weight plus the pin, plus added weight in the fiver front storage, plus two 30 pound propane cylinders all add up. I think youll find that standard max tow ( not HD Payload package) F150 will be short on payload.

Door does say 1810, but yes, I agree we would be teetering on the edge with a fifth wheel due to payload. But on a happier note, it might mean we can tow a longer trailer! LOL

Thanks. We have been looking into it. But it'll be double the price of our truck to replace it with a new (comparably equipped) F250 or F350. Mind you that's diesel versions too, which adds another $10K on or so.

We did 5,800 miles this summer doing it. BUT - we made sure our F-150 also came with the heavy duty payload package - bigger rims/tires, suspension, etc. Without that, you will not have the capacity to carry the pin weight. As it is, we have to be careful not to overload with stuff, as we are right on the edge of max payload.
I haven't seen any other 1/2 tons that have a higher payload - most have lower. So evaluate your own vehicle and intended fifth carefully. You also might be able to squeak by, but don't be surprised if you can't....

I tow my Eagle 27.5 5th wheel with a 2012 Tundra. No Problems.

I would more concerned with running out of payload with a 1/2 ton truck than its ability to pull the weight.

The hitch weight of the HTs from Jayco run less than 1,400 pounds before loading them up with your stuff. I would think you could pull any of them with your 1/2 ton. We pull ours with a 3/4 ton D/A combo GMC and don't have any problems, but it's a little bit of overkill.

anyways i have been pulling my 2014 HT 27.5BHS all summer with my 2006 f150 xlt with a 5.4 and 3.55's, generally within a couple hundred miles and it has been pretty good, a little bit of a dog because i have bigger tires but all in all it has been a pleasure, i just upgraded to a cummins but with stock tires and 3.73's you should be fine wth most of the HT line, you can save yourself a little payload by taking out the spare tire and loading the trailer more to the back
