Another question about air in water lines

Info:
2016 GH 29mv
Tankless water heater
Routine winterization/de-winterization

Besides the normal purging of air during filling and valve changeovers, I noticed yesterday that the pump was running quietly but obviously not pumping to produce pressure to shut itself off. We had been on the "Normal" setting for several days with no issues and I had left the pump switch on as we travelled around to several locations. Water use had been normal all along, so I purged the air from the system, heard the pump working normally then shutting off as soon as the faucet was shut off, and it's worked fine since.

My question is, how does air even enter the system after prolonged function on "Normal" configuration? I see no evidence of leakage and the plumbing in all other aspects seems completely normal.
