I am trying to decide between Hughes watchdog vs the progressive industries ems. I am looking at the portable units for 30 amp. Any experience with either or opinions on which one is better let me know, Thks.

I don't know much about the Hughes watchdog but have heard good things. We've used Progressive units in our last 3 campers, both portable and hard wired, and have never had a problem.

I just purchased a 50a Hughes Watchdog as a replacement for the Progressive that bit the dust after 6 or more years of service. I like the app access to the watchdog so far and it was $150. less expensive. It will serve my needs.

Also CW had a Southwire unit on sale a couple weeks ago that was also considered.

I design and build electrical systems and analyze electrical specifications. The Hughes is an excellent quality unit with great features as is the Progressive. What you want to look for is the Joule rating of each model. The higher the Joule rating the more protection your electrical system will have in a damaging event. I know on the Hughes 50 amp EMS (they are not "surge suppressers") has a higher Joule rating than Progressive and Surge Guard.

HUGHES is new to the market. Progressive and Surge Guard companies both have been sold in recent years. Guaranty's not as good as they used to be. Hughes has Bluetooth capability and is cheaper.

I just purchased a Hughes Watchdog to replace my 50a Progressive which bit the dust and was not repairable or under warranty.I think it will serve my needs

So far the only thing I don't like is the tag on the back. Made in China, but it is well made, comes with good owner comments and I think it will serve my needs.

A big feature of the Hughes EPO models is the replaceable surge module so you don't have to replace the whole unit if it takes a hit. Only thing I think they could do better, at least for the internal hardwired unit I bought, is change the wiring locations to include strain clamps. I made my own but ones built into the unit would be better.
