truck recommendations

Knowing nothing about trucks, I need advice. I have a 31' Jayco Premier Eagle Trailer. I need recommendations for a truck to pull it up mountains in all weather conditions. New or used

IMHO, for that size trailer you're going to want at least a 3/4 ton truck. With that said, a 1 ton isn't much more expensive, so my recommendation would be to go with that as you'll also have plenty of capacity if/when you upgrade to a bigger unit. Don't make the mistake I did and not go with enough truck the first time - it's an expensive upgrade.

You'll do well with any of the big 3 manufacturers. I looked at all 3 when I bought my current truck and liked features of all of them. I settled on the RAM as I thought it was the best value for the money, and for the Cummins engine.

Like my neighbor from Duxbury says, I would go at least 3/4 ton. We have had two F-250's, first one was diesel that we took from DFW, to the Grand Canyon, SLC, Yellowstone and Mt.Rushmore (towed like our 30ft camper was not even back there). This one we have now is a 6.2 gasser and does the job well, not as good as the diesel though.

I'd go 1 Tom/ 3500 also. If you are going heavy towingand long distance buy a diesel. If not, gas engines are great also. I picked up a new Ram 3500 SRW 6.4 hemi in November. Love RAM trucks.

I allways had too little truck. Picked up a Ram 2500 with the Cummins. You won't have any trouble pulling what ever you want.

Those trailers are heavy mine is. I traded up from a 2500 to a 3500 in anticipation of a 5er some day. Had a Ram 2500 with the Cummins and it pulled great. Two trips out west and one trip east to D.C. and the diesel had power to spare pulling up the mountains and the exhaust brake on the way down is another diesel perk. Now have a Ford F-350 with the Powerstroke.

I guess my point is get a 350/3500 truck, for future trailer upgrades, with a diesel motor for mountain towing.

Your 2015 Eagle Premier 318RETS has a GVWR of 9,975lbs...., so your recommended loaded tongue weight (at GVWR gross) would be in the 1,296lbs to 1,496lbs range (13% to 15% of gross). IMO 9,000lbs would be a moderately loaded 318RETS (1,170lbs to 1,350lbs tongue weight). TT loaded tongue weight gets subtracted from a TV's payload capacity.

IMO a 3/4 ton gasser would accommodate the 318RETS under moderate loading..., but, if you tend to load heavy with "frequent" mountain towing then I would lean toward a diesel (based on my personal towing expectations).

For what it's worth, when I priced new trucks last spring the difference between a 2500HD and 3500HD was about 1K...., I would have gone with the 3500HD but GM didn't make it in the Double Cab body style.

Most people don't complain about having to much truck.

I made the mistake 5 years ago. I bought an F-250 PSD thinking that's all the truck I'll ever need. Now we're considering upgrading to a 5th wheel, specifically the Jayco Northpoint 377rlbh where I'll need to come up with 300lbs more payload just to tow it empty.

This is what I did...don't do what I did!
I had a '92 Camaro...we bought a popup...just slapped a hitch on the car and down the road we went.
Then realized I need to upgrade TV...so I went up to a Sport Trac for the popup.
Bought a 287BHBE and towed with the DW's Infiniti QX56...So I sold my Mustang and bought a Ram 2500 diesel.
Then we purchased the 377 5th wheel...So of course I just purchased a Ram 3500 diesel dually.

I'm not saying that you need the dually, but If I had it to do all over again, I'd have purchased a 3500 (350) single rear wheel when I was looking at the 2500.

Just my .02 cents...Just trying to save you some money!
