Grey Water Troubles

A little background: We are newer campers... got a Jayco Jay Series 1206 last year and it does not have toilet or shower, only a tiny sink, and there’s no grey water tank. The sink just drains out a hole on the side of the camper. We bought the camper from a well-known dealership in our area and were told that it’s not illegal to let that water trickle in all 50 states; that some places frown on it, but basically, the camper is designed to just let the sink water onto the ground. Again. We are new to camping.

We’ve been out camping five or six times and never had any trouble letting the water run a little here and there. We use paper products while camping... I only wash utinsels we use for cooking. That’s it. Maybe a few gallons at a time, if that.

This trip out, new campground for us, several fellow campers complained to the CG attendant. Apparently it’s against the rules here.

I guess I’m here to ask for an education from those of you who have been around for a while and may be familiar with our kind of setup... what should we do in the future? We don’t want to be violating any laws or campground policies. 🤦🏽*♀️ How do you properly dispose of grey water without a tank? My apologies in advance for my ignorance.

It all depends on where you're camping as to "Grey Water Rules".. Some say it's OK other's no it is all dependent on the local/State health depts. As to what to do. Buy a 5 gal water jug or even a 5 gal bucket and run a hose and empty it when full. Many CG's have spots just to dump grey water..

This is what I would do. Get a bucket, and drill a bunch of 1/2 inch holes in the bottom. Place the bucket under your grey water drain, or run a hose from the grey water drain into the bucket. Problem solved.

Most RV parks do not allow the discharge of any grey or black water for any reason. Most all National Forests prohibit the discharge of grey or black water as do all state parks in Arizona and probably other states.

Catching it in a container and taking it to the nearest dump site is probably the best solution if there is one available. While, obviously grey water is different than black, there is still some "stuff" being dumped that attract insects, not to mention skunks and other scavengers at camp grounds. It can also stink after awhile and annoy you and other campers.

Some people are stupid and some laws are questionable but as long as they are there, the laws that is, I don't recommend trying to sneak around them. If you get caught you're out on your ear. It sounds like you are trying to do the right thing but you don't want to become that "one" that every campground has

My husband likes this reply the best.

I legitimately really only need to wash a baby bottle twice a day. I guess that was enough to get two of my camp neighbors to complain on me. *sigh* I can walk to the bathhouse to do that, but I’m sure someone will complain about that too.

Buy a small 15 gallon blue boy tank or a 5 gallon bucket to carry with you. Just run a small piece of hose between it and the tank and use your sink.

It is against the law in most states for obvious reasons but was pretty common years ago. Many state parks have grey water dumps near the sites and others don't. Most cg's have a designated dump site for grey and black water.

Still many abuse the privilege of camping in public areas by dumping and it can get rather stinky in a site quickly.

They may since many have a "No Dish Washing Policy" in the bathhouses.

If you use a five gallon bucket, you could dump it down a toilet.

Seriously!

That’s a great idea too. They’re really worried about grey water here, and from our site, we can see 6 tires and half a hot tub sitting in the lake. *face palm* 🙄

Put it in a bucket and dump it after dark on a tree or a bush or down the toilet at the campground bathhouse. Problem solved in my book. I once had neighbors in a Campground that complained about my cooking Bacon on my outside grille, He said it Offended him because of his Religion. I told him no problem go inside your camper while I cook my bacon and eggs for breakfast and you will not smell it..

What you say you are doing is less than most tent campers. They don't have tanks or 5 gallon buckets to dump. I would also find a thirsty tree, in this case.
