Over night campgrounds
We will be going from ny to tenn on rt 81 looking for a over night campground in Virginia along 81. Anyone have any suggestions. We are coming from Hudson valley in ny and would like to get into a campground sometime between 4 and 6 pm. We will probably leave our area around 6:00 AM and will be leaving on a Sunday morning.

I cant make any specific suggestions but I will say the AllStays app is worth the $9.99 price tag! You can see all the campgrounds in that area, read reviews, and link directly to their website. Easy to filter results too.
Good luck and safe travels!

Shenandoah Valley Campground LLC. 1/4 mile off 81. We are hitting this south in few weeks for the first time. Flat, pull through and easy on off the route. Hoping we can stay connected. The other option we did last year was Fort Chiswell RV park. Again right off 81 at the intersection of I77. Nice family run place, not frills, but pool was nice and heated. Pull throughs as well.

If you are a PA member, there is Sportsmans campground near Radford, Va. PA rates are $20 a night. If you get a little further and get to Tenn., there is Baileyton RV Park at Baileyton, Tenn. There rates are $17 a night Sun. thru Thurs. I have stayed at Baileyton twice. Quiet and clean but no frills. I will know more about Sportsmans as were are staying there this Wed. night. We use PA campgrounds just about all the time when we going to final destination.

Over night campgrounds
We just stayed at Candy Hill campground in Winchester this weekend. It's maybe 8 miles off of I-81 from the south, not sure about approaching from the north. It was a pretty nice campground, with mid-range prices (about $40 for full+cable for a family of four with all taxes and whatnot), pool, game room, well stocked RV parts in the store, good power and water service, and the policies weren't onerous. The only substantial negative I have is that it's fairly close to Rt 37 and our particular site was very tiny. If you're in the "back", the road noise is much less noticeable, but that seems to be where all the seasonal sites are.
There were a number of obvious long distance travelers that arrived Saturday afternoon and departed quite early Sunday.
There's a different Shenandoah Valley campground in Staunton, VA (around mm220) that I hear is quite nice as well. I haven't been there, however.

On June 8th we left Gardiner NY heading to Nashville. We decided to stay in a hotel instead of Candy Hill. There is a Best Western about 500 yards off I81 in Winchester VA that had plenty of parking for RVs and Tractor Trailers. I paid $64 for the night with AARP discount.

We just did the same trip, Hudson Valley to Nashville, last month. We took it easy both ways, with 2 stops each direction. Had to stop at Garick Rv in NJ on way down in the afternoon, so made the first stop at the Jonestown KOA in PA, and the second at the Wytheville KOA in Va.; both close to Rt 81. On the way back, Wytheville again, and then Cabela's in Pa. Enjoy the trip, Rt 81 is an easy drive.

We travel on Interstate 81 a lot and have stayed in several campgrounds in VA. I think that Shenandoah Valley Campground LLC is by far the easiest to get in and out of in a bigger rig (we have a 40' Pinnacle). If you have a smaller rig, Natural Bridge KOA is right off the interstate at the exit. It is a little tight with our 5ver, but doable. We stayed at Dixie Caverns and the campground isn't the best, but the caverns were worth seeing. We also stayed at Lee Hi which is part of a truck stop a couple of miles off I81. It was okay for an overnight stop. Our 1st choice remains Shenandoah Valley Campground LLC'
