2017 Dodge 2500 with 6.4 Hemi
We are about ready to make a decision on buying our next tow vehicle. And today we drove the 2017 Dodge Ram Crew Cab with a 6.4 hemi, and we loved it.
We are hoping to hear some comments about these truck good or bad?
And we are having a hard time finding out what kind mileage we could expect when not towing which will be about 75% of the time.
Any and all help is much appreciated as always.

Well I am new to this forum but I am a commercial sales manager at a ram dealer. Depending on how you drive unloaded I have customers tell me real world 14-16mpg with mixed driving and mostly obeying speed limits. This 6.4 is a great engine and with the multi link rear end you will still have a great ride unloaded for a 3/4 ton truck. Fuel economy will vary with axel ratio as well as 2wd or 4wd. If you want fuel economy go diesel but it's a bigger upfront cost but if you plan on keeping the truck for longer than 5years it's worth it especially as the toys get bigger! Jpekar, thanks for your input and your honesty. Yes I would prefer the diesel but I can't stretch our budget that much. The truck we are looking at has the 4:10 rear. And the tow package. My salesman tells me if are driving in and around town we could get 15 mpg, and on the highway maybe 17 of course this is without our camper on the back. These numbers I can live with. But after reading some reviews, I am not sure they are correct. But yes we love the truck and look forward to many years of service.

your MPG can vary widely based on your driving style.
Good choice on going with the 6.4 semi with the 4.10 axle.

17-18 highway yes but around town 15 well that might be a little to over, but I would say about 11-13 mpg and will be hard to do all the time. So if you want to go with the 6.4L I will say go for it and I'm like you I don't have the $8-$12k extra, not for what I use it for.
Now if you are going to tow all the time or a lot and have a large 5th wheel well the diesel is the way to go.

If your looing for fuel mileage better get a Diesel , not towing we get about 25mpg ( No mods done to our truck) towing our 40 foot Eagle 12/15 give or take depending on grade .note we do not tow over 60 MPH ..
As far as purchase price we did not buy our Truck new, we bought it pre owned with only 12K miles,with remaining warranty from factory and saved a ton of money,check with a Dealer.. Good luck do what's right for you ..

It depends on how much traveling you will do with the camper. We have a diesel but we tow a lot. The Dodges can start to have turbo problems at 100k if you drive in town a lot. Mine got a new one at 110k.
If I were buying a new truck I'd be tempted to get a gasser, even with all the towing we do.
Mileage? Yep, diesel gets a bit better, but, diesel costs a lot more these days and how many miles will it be to make up the cost difference? Diesel maint costs are higher as well. They hold a LOT of oil and have other maint needs.
My truck is modified and we get 13 towing and 20 in town. When it was stock we got 11 towing and 17-18 in town.

We have a 2016 2500 Laramie Longhorn Mega Cab 4x4 6.4 Hemi with 3.73 Axle.
We bought it new in Feb 2017. We tow a 22FB and can't tell it's behind us. Love the truck. We bought it mainly for the camper as we have other vehicles to drive. We were pulling the camper with our now gone 2008 Dodge Durango Limited 4x4 5.7 hemi with factory tow package and the camper was pretty much pulling us.

Tom and Kathy,
I have a Tundra and get a pitiful 12.5 MPG, but I knew that going in.(Tundra is the worse MPG out of all the full size trucks).
What the salesman told you sounds about right. Assuming you're not the jack rabbit start kind of guy who zooms up to the next light before hitting the brakes hard.
I've considered a larger TT and I've test drove the 2500, that would be my TV if I make the move.
You'll love the 2500, 6.4 w 4.10's.

I have a 2016 with 3.73 gears and pull a 24 RBS, almost 6k lbs. I get 9-10 towing, 12-13 city and 16-17 highway.

I've owned them all, including the Tundra, and my 2014 2500 Ram Laramie diesel is by far the best. The truck corners wonderfully and has a very. quiet and comfortable ride. If you plan to buy a 5th wheel recognize you will be limited in payload if you go diesel with the 2500. I love mine but my payload is only about 2,300 lbs. That worked for us but won't if you want a larger 5th wheel. I also bought the factory air shocks. I'm not sure this is needed but it sure is nice when leveling your trailer. Best of luck in your decision.

I assume you’ve already moved on a new rig, love my 6.4 but I’m here to tell you, those numbers are a dream! Maybe down hill, but on avg, I’m 11-12 mpg.
Towing I’m 8mpg. If I’d have know I’d be upgrading my trailer, I’d have gone with the diesel. Oh well ... I do have a lifetime warrenty on the hemi though

Overall average for 177 Ram 2500's with the 6.4 is 12 MPG.
Ram 2500 with the Cummins reflects an overall average of 16-17 MPG.
These were the same numbers I remember seeing back in 2016 when we were trying decide between the 6.4 Hemi and Cummins.

I have 2017 ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi. I have about 20k miles on it so far. Bought it for camping last December. I haven’t towed a thing yet and I average 14 mpg. I have some weight involved with a toolbox on truck. Maybe 250lbs in tools and toolbox. . Lots of highway miles. I consider myself an average driver. Not too aggressive. Not too much like a little old lady.
