Generators

Just purchased a 2017 Jayfeather 23RQLS. I'm considering a generator and looking for suggestions. 99% of the time it will be DW and myself (plus Mike the GSD). After reading thru previous posts, some use the generator for the slide, if nothing else. What units are you all using/ suggesting?
Thanks.

what ever you buy, DON'T get a construction generator. Get a quiet inverter generator.

I like Hondas but other rave about yamaha's and champions.

Hondas are expensive but I believe they will out last the others

The generator you choose will depend on what you will be using it for.

I currently have a single 1700/2000 watt Champion inverter. I plan on getting a second one in the fall to be able to run them in parallel to run the AC. I went with the dual Champions as they are light weight, quiet, and a little more affordable than the Hondas or Yamahas. They also now, as of January 2017 I believe, come with a 3 year warranty. With an inexpensive warranty extension from the retailer I'm covered for 5 years!

The single 2000 is plenty to run everything but the AC. I also looked at the larger Champion 3000~3400 range including those with dual fuel (gas or LPG) and/or electric start that will run everything including the AC.

A lot depends on whether it has to run the AC or not. Most everything else can be run on a 2000 watt generator, but the AC requires 3000/3100/3400 watts. I don't run the AC, so I have a 2000 watt Powerhorse inverter generator from Northern Tool. Starts first pull most times (nevermore than 2 pulls, even the first time out of the box) and runs at 52-61 db. Most of the time mine is running on the lower end because we mostly use it to keep the battery charged - only occasionally run the microwave with the generator.

Im Using a Yamaha 2400. Its a great unit and well built. It also runs my A/C but wont run much else (like microwave) if you have it doing that. For me i just turn off AC if i need to use other bigger power drawing appliances.

We have the Champion 75531i 3100 Watt inverter generator with remote start.

We were rural camp hosts (no elec.) for the summer in 2016 and used it primarily to keep the batteries charged and to run the microwave when the DW didn't want to use the stove or oven.

As a test, we have used the air cond for a short period with no problems.

Most roof A/C units will run at 1100-1500 watts or so, but require over 3000 watts to start. I think the microwave is about the same 1100 or so, but won't require nearly as much starting amps as the A/C unit would. They key is to not try to start them at the same time, and use a generator with capacity over 3000 watts, maybe 3500-4000.

I use the Honda EU6500is. I can run both air conditioners, the microwave, and a hair dryer all at the same time if I want to do so.

Generator

I bought a Champion 3100 inverter generator 2 days ago after 2 years of reading about all brands. I got tired of reading. $800 at Blaines in Rice lake wisconsin. Used a friends 2000 Honda for a 2 month trip last year. We couldn't wait to get out of N.D. and MT. and into the mountains. That was the last trip anywhere without a genny to run the AC. I only have 5 hours on the Champion.
Its about 85 pounds. I wouldn't want anything heavier to lift into the back of my truck. The 2000 Honda was sweet but I would have to buy 2 of them or one 3000 Honda. In the end the $799 Champion got me. There are as many opinions as stars in the sky regarding inverter-generators

As others mentioned get an inverter type.

Also you will want to figure out what your power needs are. If it is too small to run an AC and you want that, well then you will be buying a bigger one. Going overly big though will just consume more fuel than if you got one smaller and sized right. Also the bigger ones are heavier to move around.

I have twin Honda 2000i generators. I had had one of the Honda's for a number of years, so when it was necessary to add a generator in order to run my AC, I needed to get another Honda. The 2nd one is the Companion model. After hooking up both together, I get 30 amp service for the trailer.

A group of friends and I do college football weekends together every fall. So I hook up both of my gennys. Many weekends in September, we need AC so both are going full out. By the time we get to November, we're down to running only one on Eco mode at the time.

Long story short, you'll need to figure out what your generator needs are. If you are camping in cooler climes (high mountians) during the summer, you may be able to get by with just one generator for microwave on occasion and charging batteries.

If like me you will need to run your AC, you'll need at least a 3K generator, or a pair of 2K generators.

Hey Joe A, I dont know if I read your original post correctly but you don't need a genie to run your slide. It's 12V.

Yeah, I could have worded it better That was just one scenario after reading thru some older posts. I don't need one per se, but may pick one up after using the trailer a few times to see if it is indicated.
Thanks!

True, but you really don't want those batteries doing the hard high-amp work of pushing out the slides, all by themselves, then expecting them to run the whole weekend. It's wise to have either the genset running or plug in to shore power to help supply the higher amps required to run out the slides. In a pinch, leaving the TV hooked up and running will help with alternator power to the batteries as well.

My slide and power tongue jack are only used when my TV is attached to the camper, and running. (when boondocking)

Back to generators though, this is mine, it runs the whole camper when I need it to.

With our smaller trailer (13k AC) the Yamaha 2400 generator was perfect. A little heavy at 75lb but I could still lift it into the truck for travel. It was just enough to run the AC in the trailer. Fuel tank was big enough for about 4hrs running the AC.

If you have a 15k AC then your choices are 1) 3000W or bigger generator or 2) two 2000W generators (the type that can be synched). Some of the 3k units have remote electric start, which can be nice. They usually weigh 100lb or more. They have larger fuel tanks.

As noted above, two 2kW sets are more flexible and can be moved around. If I ever need a generator that's the way I will go.

I've have a Kipor 2000 inverter genny and was under the impression it wouldn't run the 13.5 A/c in my unit, I read some folks have managed to run the A/c no problem, I was trying a few different things last weekend and tried the A/c with the convertor breaker off, I figured while the genny is running if I need to cool the camper off for a while I could do it without the convertor charging batteries, and when the A/c is off could switch the convertor back on, there is no real draw on the 12volt that I know of if limiting use of lights and accessories, anyone else go this route or see any real issues with doing so, I am also switching to 2 Costco Gc 6volt batteries, just waiting for a couple other addons before I can get them hooked up.
