Snowmobile??
So I've been watching Yukon Men on the satellite and I can't figure out for the life of me why they call snowmobiles snow machines. Is the word snowmobile a lower 48 term or what? I've heard them called sleds all the time but not snow machines.
In my book, a snow machine is one of those things you find at the ski areas that atomize high pressure water in front of a large tubeaxial fan which creates artificial snow...hence the term snow machine.
I'm not aware that any of the major players in the market (Arctic Cat, Polaris, Yamaha, et al) call their products snow machines.
Light it up! Let's hear your ideas!!

They use them a lot more than me, so I assumed I was using the term improperly.

I think it is a regional thing.

The original snow machine was made out of a Ford model T. Here are a few pictures of a T, a Fordson tractor and a chevy.

Up in Thief River Falls MN my relatives call them "snocats", obviously because it's the home of Arctic Cat.

I asked a few snowmobilers at a meeting this morning and here is what I found out. Most everywhere above the northern US/Canada border, folks call them snow machines or skiddoos. One fellow said that while he was in Canada, a canuk asked him if he was a member of the skiddoo club. The fellow replied, "No, I have a Yamaha so I can't be a member of the Ski-Doo (TM) club." The canuk replied with an explanation that in these parts, if it has a track, engine and 2 skis in the front that it is a skiddoo and eligible to join the local skiddoo club.
So, it all boils down to the local jargon whether you have a snocat, skiddoo, snow machine, snowmobile, sled, Ski-Doo (TM), or whatever. Case closed.

We call ours "sleds" around here. Anything longer seems like a mouthful.

Snowmobile I believe is a trademarked term owned by Bombardier, makers of Ski-Doo. They may just be avoiding infringement.

I don't believe snowmobile is trademarked, as I've seen many brands of sleds sold under the snowmobile moniker. If Bombardier does have the trademark, they certainly aren't enforcing it with other snowmobile makers.
As others have said, it all boils down to where you live and how they refer to their toys. Snowmachine is very common, as is sled.
