New Tire Minder owner with questions
Just before leaving on our trip Houston to Chaco Canyon NM (and "yes" it was closed) I purchased Tire Minder. Setup required reading the manual
Seems to work fine (mostly). But I had several false blow-outs and alerts of low pressure. But overall I think it's pretty good - just got to sort out my glitches.
So, for those of you with TPMS with valve stem mounted sensors:
1) do you have any false alarms - do you know why?
2) do you have metal or rubber stems? (I have rubber)
3) If your monitor has a "booster" as an option do you have it installed? (I do not have one - yet)
I called them today and asked these questions. The person I talked with didn't seem to think that metal stems were necessary. She was mostly of the opinion that interference was the culprit. As I was cleaning the TT after our return I noticed what looked like marks on the wheels from the stem or sensor rubbing. Possibly the centrifugal force bends the stem enough to allow it to touch the rim. I'm not 100% sure they're touching, just thinking.
Opinions on this?

I have the TST system and I had to replace all my valve stems with metal due to flexing from centrifugal force. I had one start leaking. The owners manual for mine suggests the change. I would do it.

Hey Norty,
That's good input, thanks. I'm leaning towards replacing the valves but still undecided. My owners says, "...due to their light weight, they may be used on wheels equipped with rubber valve stems". They claim the sensors weigh 0.3 oz and I see the user replaceable sensors for TST are 0.6 oz. But your leaking stem makes me go "hmm". Thanks again!

It could be possible the false alarms are due to the signal being too weak. The "booster" is promoted as a solution to a loss of signal problem. I wonder too about signal "conflicts" between say the OEM system in the TV and the Tire Minder system. It would not surprise me if they both use the same frequency band.

He may be on to something. I would contact the mfg and ask that question. Also, we never have a problem with signals fading or a need for a signal booster.

Another thought about false alarms; if the valve stems are flexing enough to allow the sensor to hit the rim, and the Tire Minder has the replaceable batteries in the sensor, I'm wondering if the mechanical shock would cause the battery contacts to shift and introduce electrical noise in the sensor's transmit signal?

If that is the case, there will soon be valve stems cracking due to fatigue.

Yes, I think metal valve stems would be a good first step for problem solving. It would of course involve re-mounting the tires, but worth doing, even just for preventing future valve stem failure.

A little update. I've installed them on my TV (we're stuck at home for a while) and haven't seen ANY problems. I work from a home office and don't get the truck out much but the couple of times I have they've seemed accurate and have reported no false alarms. I talked with Minder and the signal booster was recommended. The kit now comes with one standard. I'm going to drive around with them on the truck for a while to see if anything pops up.

Something to consider; rubber valve stems come in a few different lengths, from short and stubby about 1/2 inch long, to nearly two inches long. When Tire Minder says the sensors work fine with rubber valve stems, perhaps they mean the short stubby ones.

Yeah, that's good too David. My stems aren't very long (TT is in storage so I can't run out & measure) I'd guess and inch. I doubt they're 1.5" long, do they come in .25" increments?

If I were going do anything,it would be metal stems. Why take a chance?
