Just curious why they chose to stress the frame in tension, instead of compression, as it would be with a normal load?

Probably because it is a marketing piece and we are supposed to be impressed about it, not actually think about it....

WTF? The bracket that "simulates the axle" has the winch cables and the load cables both directly bolted to it? How does this put any load on the actual frame of the truck? The only thing that impressed me in that video was the crane's carrying capacity, and perhaps the stupidity of the guy standing about 10 feet away from the whole thing with a guide rope in the last shot.

That "test" was totally meaningless. Any halfway decent frame loaded the way that one was could have handled that load. Now, if they had suspended the load from the bed center of the frame, I would have been impressed.
