Correct, this is the reason for 3/4 vs 1 ton trucks. Some communities consider a 1 ton truck a commercial vehicle and therefore it can't be parked on a residential street... but a 3/4 ton truck can be parked on a residential street.
Lots of bridges or side roads are marked 5 tons or less GVWR. Some places don't allow heavier trucks to drive in the left lane of a multilane highway over 5K lbs.
Its an arbitrary, artificial number. Registration fees are higher if you are over 10K lbs. You are limited where you can park or drive if you are over 10K.
If you are buying new and don't have to worry about any of those regulations, it makes more sense to spend $600 more and buy a 1 ton. If you have to worry about those things, you have a decision to make.
