Weight problem
I have a 2010 GMC 1500 extended cab with standard box and a camper shell. We bought a 2005 25z jay feather last December and I wanted to check the tongue weight on the new trailer because I thought the numbers might be close. I towed the trailer from Phoenix to southern CA with no problems. I went to the scales the other day and weighed my truck empty since the yellow did not include the camper shell. My weight with full fuel is 5,410. Taking this weight from my 6,800 gross weight I am left with 1,390 for payload. My passenger weight is 600 LBS and my weight distribution hitch and weight bars add another 72 LBS leaving me with 718 LBS for tongue weight and anything in the back of the truck. The JAYCO web site shows the tongue to be 605 LBS. I am looking for a tongue weight of about 750 LBS or 13% of loaded trailer weight. This trailer has a gross weight of 5800 LBS. I will be over weight for the truck. Am I correct? Do I need to replace my 1500 with a 2500? At this point I can't put anything in the back of the truck. We are looking to lighten the trailer up by replacing the blocks that I carried in the Kiwi for the stablizers with plastic pads and reducing weight any where can. I plan on weighting the truck and trailer tomorrow to see where I am with the tongue weight and gross weights of the trailer and the truck. Thank for your advice.

I wouldn't sweat 2 or 300 lbs too much. It's not *ideal* but I don't know if it justifies a 2500 unless you've already been tossing around the idea. If it bugs you, dump the shell.
Not the popular answer, but I wouldn't worry about that too much.

That's what I would do, simulating your normal "going camping" weights as close as possible (and/or account for them), then revisit your loaded weight situation. IMO with your present TV/TT combination you should be able to work your loaded weights in your favor.

If you are full timing you have to have the ideal setup. But for the few days you are taken the unit out I wouldn't worry about being a couple hundred pounds over either.

My numbers were that close too and when we went to the scale our rear axle weight was over. Towing was okay but not great. We have since upgraded from an Expedition to an Excursion which is like going from a 1500 to a 2500. Much more pleasurable. If you have funds you will most likely be happier but you could probably get by for a while.
Don't forget about propane and batteries on the hitch too. Here is a handy little calculator.

Sawdust I was in a very similar situation as you. If I did everything just right. Basically didn't pack any extras I could be at or just over my RAWR and my GVWR. It always stressed me out, for one because I had to be so careful about what we brought. Always talking myself out of needing something, and always thinking what if. How would I feel if something happened. Every trip last year I was stressed about it and don't think that's what camping should be.

I've always favored this calculator, personally:
PopUp Explorer
Grab the towing capacity worksheet.

I made some adjustments to my weight distribution hitch this morning and then went to the cat scales. Here are my numbers.
Empty wt. of truck no passengers or cargo 5410
1st wt. passengers and cargo only Steer 3440
Drive 2800
Gross wt. 6240
2nd wt. without wt. bars hooked up Steer 3460
Drive 3440
Trailer 4780
Gross wt. 11680
3rd wt. with wt. bars connected Steer 3460
Drive 3440
Trailer 4780
Gross wt. 11680
My passenger wt. is (3 adults) 600
Trailer wt. 5280
Tongue wt. (.125%) 660
My trailer wt. is 520 LBS under the trailer gross wt. and my truck is 100 LBS over its gross wt. of 6800. The last thing I need in my life is stress. Most of our trips are less than 150 miles with one long trip of 300 or 400 miles a year. Being retired I have more time than money so I will have to take my time arriving at my destination and save for a 2500.

Your weights are the same with and without bars connected? Did you mis-copy?

Appears to be a CAT certificate reference oversight (I've done it) with the "2nd wt. without wt. bars hooked up" weights. One give away is that one would expect the Steer weight to drop below the truck only Steer of 3,440lbs.

Well I'm not one of the experts here but it appears that you have successfully transferred the weight to where it is supposed to be.

IMO you will be fine towing with your GM 1500 as long as you maintain your present loading habits.
Great job at the CAT scale......, more folks should make the same visit at least once!

I installed Firestone rear suspension airbags on my truck.

It looks like you may be ok, as long as mentioned, just watch what you do load in the bed.
We were in the same position, up to about 200lbs over the gvwr of our '10 Chevy 1500. But we had a fair amount of stuff loaded in the tt that my better half wanted in the truck bed. So as you can see by my signature, we now have a 2500HD, and then got a new trailer! Lol
I had considered removing the Century cab high topper, but that would have only got us down to the gvwr.
Adding airbags will not increase the axle rating in any way.
Good luck.
