Brakes

I don't buy that "brake wear in" crap.
Have never heard that before buying this 5th wheel.
Mine are going to wear in.......someday when I install disc brakes.

Just wait until you change the pads & rotors on your own vehicle...

Takes 5-10 presses on the pedal until everything seats. Remember to give the brake pedal two good strokes before putting it in gear!

But 200+ mile break-in? Something is wrong.

I can understand that Mike.
What I think is BS, is them saying the factory DRUM brakes need to wear in.

This is not my first rodeo......have had lots of brand new trailers and NEVER heard that before. LOL

Someone pulled my trailer from Indiana to Tampa, FL and IF that didn't break them in.......
I DO NOT think it's gonna happen

Being old enough to have worked on a bunch of drum brakes, the wear-in makes sense to me. The shoes don't have the exact same curve as the drum causing them to initially only make contact at the ends or in the middle. Wearing-in allows for the curves to match and get contact on the full length of the shoe.

If'n the trailer isn't stopping properly, try test #1:

1) Hitch up.
2) Yank the breakaway cable
3) Try to move the rig.

Result analysis:

A) Moves easily, problems with the trailer's brakes.
B) Tough to move, problem with the controller or wiring to the trailer.

Personally, my first TT had a dead short to ground because the factory had pinched the brake wires under a U-bolt holding the axle to the spring. Must've driven the original owner NUTZ. I found evidence of at least 4 magnet replacements. The only reason I found it was I replaced the axle after I let the bearings go a little too long.

I just got my trailer back from dealer. Got new brakes and they needed (I guess still need) breaking in. I think I'm going to save my money and get the disc brake kit.

^ This.

When I drove my new trailer (see sig) off the lot it had almost zero braking. Did a uey and complained to the dealership. They looked at the brakes and said the guy who delivered it from the factory apparently had a faulty brake controller as there was zero indication the brakes had been used at all. They swore all that was needed was driving the trailer for a while to seat the shoes to the drum.

I was very skeptical but drove it home anyway - and they were correct. The braking had definitely improved by the time I got to the house (45 miles). After another 200 miles or so of use they were good to go - or actually good to stop.

Believe it or not but all brakes need a break in. They call it burnishing. Also drum brakes perform poorly when cold. Heat them up when you first get on the road with the manual lever.

The hotshot would of traveled mostly highways so there would be a whole lot of braking done. Most if not all probably have exhaust brakes as well.

Maybe.......but I will be doing my install.
I'm NOT paying $1000.00 for an install I feel I can do a better job on anyway.

My dealer - whom I regard as a good dealer with good service - replaced all of my brakes under warranty due to errors when the brakes were installed on the axles. The brakes were the Dexter self-adjusting type. When I picked up my trailer, there were NO brakes AT ALL. The mechanic had not done any brake adjustment at all. Guess since they adjust automatically, there is no need for brakes when you first pull the trailer since they will eventually adjust.

The point being, maybe other dealers do the same thing so the brakes have to self-adjust and seat the shoes before the brakes are any good.

Let's do it at Big John's place in LA. He'll make sure we do things correctly or he'll feed us to the alligators!

All I know is I have owned new RV's and enclosed trailers and even flat bed trailers.
I have NEVER had to let brakes "wear in"
That is total BS!!
What are you supposed to do, NOT run over someone cause "my brakes aren't wore in"
yet??
