Generator Issues

I have an Onan 5500 in my fifth wheel. Everything works fine off my Generator except the Air Conditioning. After a few minutes the 20A breaker pops on the generator, sensing the open leg the surge guard blocks all generator power. It was suggested to me that the AC may be drawing too much power, but I don't know how to test the AC unit.

It's strange that a 5500 would not run the air 20 amps x 120 volts is only 2400 watts even adding another 2400 watts for starting surge it should handle the air unless you have something else pulling a big load !

Your a/c should be running off a circuit larger than a 20 amp, when my trailer is plugged in to only a 20 amp plug shoreline, my a/c will pop the circuit too. If your generator has a 30 amp plug your a/c should be connected to the 30 amp

Your Onan 5500 genset doesn't have (2) 30a breakers? You mentioned a 20a on it.
My Onan 5500 has (2) 30a, so did my old 5500.
