Generator / Inverter
We are considering buying a generator to allow us to camp at Federal and State Forest campgrounds rather than the more expensive State Parks.
We have a 2005 Jayflight 28RLS, with A/C. Although we aren't big fans of A/C and seldom use ours, we expect we should have a generator capable of
running the air "just in case".
Any thoughts on max power needed, brand, quietness, and how often do you run the generator when on the campsite??
thanks,

I use Honda eu2000i, won't run AC but it will everything else. I highly recommend it as will several others. If AC is a must I'd look at Yamaha 2400 model. You can't go wrong with either Honda or Yamaha Generator/Inverter.

I use 2 Yamaha EF2000is generators. They are much lighter at 44# dry than the 2400 at 75# if the additional weight would be a problem for
you. Also the 2400 may or may not start your a/c. The 2 EF2000is's run my 15000 btu a/c just fine.

My Honda eu 3000 runs my AC, but it has to be revved up and started on low. We were originally looking at a Yamaha 2400 watt which will apparently run AC units and is much lighter.

Hi Yooper421 just spent a wonderful week in the U.P. please keep in mind that the generators that the previous post recommends are what are called park generators they are very quiet but expensive, also different parks have different time spans for running generators.blah in

Not sure where you are, but a Yamaha EF2000is would not start my A/C this weekend. We were at Scofield Reservoir(Utah) around 7900 ft.
Weather was beautiful and there are full hookups, but i wanted to try it out.

Thanks everyone for the input. Looks like we were on the right track with the Honda or Yamaha. I think we'll manage without the A/C, and enjoy Michigan's fresh air instead.
Great to have this resource.

I'm a big fan of the champion inverter generators.
I bought 2 from

Don't buy a Generac. I have the IX 2000, it's the most cantankerous unit I've ever owned. No warranty service available in most of Canada. Also noisy. I've gone back to my antique Craftsman, it's noisy, but reliable. I look in envy on the Honda product, extremely quiet!!

I have the Yamaha 2400 and it starts/runs my 13.5K btu A/C unit. The start capacitor I added helped minimize the initial surge required by the generator to start the A/C. Rather than taking 4 or 5 seconds to get the compressor running (prior to installing the capacitor) it starts almost immediately after adding the capacitor.

Honda 2000 !!!
If you want to run the AC just get 2 of them with the parallel cable kit. For the times you don't need the AC then you can just run one of them (you'll want one of the "Companion" model with the 30A connector). That will give you the best flexibility.
I had a Honda 3000 before and it worked with the AC but its WAY bigger unit and just hard to store and move around and for when you don't need the AC its overkill.
You can't go wrong with the Honda and any nearby campers will love that you invested in a quiet generator. You'll just be mad that you now have to listen to people with the Champion and Generac models instead.

Running a Yamaha EF3000iSEB with built in boost.
2800W continuous
3000W for 20 min
3500W for 10 sec (battery boost to start your A/C)
Very quiet(~59db), long run time (19 hr @1/4 load), very heavy (150lbs)

I just read all these threads and they were very helpful as I am looking to run a small a/c in a 17C Jayco sport. The question I have now is what is the difference between an inverter and a generator and which is better for an RV?

Inverter is a A generator inverter puts out clean power and it is suitable to run sensitive electronics with it. Inverter Benny's are usually quieter.

I have the Honda eu2000i. I only have a 5000BTU AC in my 184BH and it runs it just fine.
Very quiet and will last all day on a tank of gas.
