No, I didn't have to "square up" the existing round hole with the unit I purchased. The square area that you are referring to on my unit was at the same depth as the outer most square housing that rests against the TT's outer wall surface. On the backside of the whole locking assembly there was an offset circular housing (where the existing hose will connect) that was a little larger than my existing opening.
I guess depending on the manufacture of the locking water inlet will dictate to what degree one has to alter the existing hole size.
