Michigan in November

Hi all-

We want to travel to Saginaw County, Michigan for five days in mid-November. We have 2018 White Hawk with the Glacier Package. Two questions, would you recommend this and, if yes, do you have any other tips for cold weather camping?

I live just a few miles south of the Saginaw county line. Typically in November you should be more than comfortable- it will likely dip below freezing most nights and some days in mid November, so be sure to run your furnace to keep tanks defrosted. It may flurry a bit but accumulating snow is pretty unlikely (though it did happen the past 2 years before Thanksgiving!).

We lived in our Jayco for 2 months during February and March last winter, so it's definitely do-able!

Any tips on the water and sewer hoses outside the trailer?

If you plan on doing this type of camping frequently I would buy one of the heated water hoses. As to the sewer hose only get that out when dumping unless you know the temps will stay above freezing. Doing it like that we survived temps in the teens numerous times.

TomR,

You didn't mention where you planned on staying in the Saginaw County area. Please note many Michigan campgrounds start closing in mid-October and/or start shutting down amenities (water, electric, dump stations, etc.)...., the further north the sooner they close.

I would bring a couple gallons of antifreeze and consider winterizing your TT prior to your departure from your Saginaw County destination in the event that you encounter freezing temps and/or delayed travel throughout your return trip home.

Be advised that Winter Storm Warnings producing a mixed bag of freezing rain and/or heavy snow accumulation (11/21/15) aren't uncommon for mid/late November in lower Michigan......., bring a snow shovel.

Bob

We would love to camp that late but with no dump stations can't do it. We stop camping the last week of October for that reason. State parks in Wisconsin shut off water and dump stations on the 10/29/2017. Most private campgrounds close middle of October.

Unless you can do dry camping (without the use of water and Black water).
Then you can camp 12 months of the year.

On the water I would recommend using a heated hose or just using the tank instead, especially if it's only a few days. When I did it I used the tank when it was cold (or winterized when it was really cold) I found the line where things would freeze no matter what was below 19 degrees- the problem area is from the connection panel on the trailer until the lines reach the heated underbelly- that's where you're most susceptible to freezing. Above 19 that wasn't an issue as long as I kept a small space heater in the basement of my 5th pointed toward the plumbing.

One way or the other it will be something of a challenge depending on the weather.
