2010 Braking system

There is certainly something to be said for "If it works don't fix it"! Sure glad I have an 09 model.

Update to the Previous Update! Epic!

Ugh! OK, squeal returned! Last month was the first chance we had to take tt back in after sitting since October. Tech said this time they just cleaned up the backing plates which was to get a better visual of what is going on. They turned (shaved) the drums to make the surface flat where the magnets rides on. Nothing was done to the magnets but cleaning. I was worried about brakes having been compromised but he said that there was minimal if any impact.

Brakes didn't squeal during the 4 mile drive to the c/g. But! When we drove home last week, there it was! The squeal!! Of course, we yet again contacted the dealer.
Service manager just emailed to say he "...just got off the phone with Dexter. They have found a squealing problem with a particular brake pad type. They are sending me a new set of pads. They feel that the timing of the new brakes that were sent could of fallen within that lot. They were good with us resurfacing the armature contact point."

Ok, so it will be in May when we get the new pads.... Will post udpdate again then

They must have fixed the problem by the 2011 model year. I haven't heard any squeals from my 26BH brakes in the 10,000 or so miles I've put on them. Hope the new pads fix the problem for you.

Oh, one other thing that several techs told us is to ALWAYS disconnect electrical connection between tv/tt prior to backing up. I guess you can do it initially to "set" the brakes (self-adjust) but each time you back the tt, it makes the brakes adjust tighter and tighter. I guess that may be a good question to ask Dexter.

Healthi, do the brakes squeel all the time like something is dragging or just when the brakes are applied?

Always... fast, slow, braking. Pretty much if the tt is moving, there is a squeal. Kinda sounds like ree-er-ree-er-ree-er. LOL, can one "visualize" re-err?

I don`t think the non G2`s, ( standard Jayflights), have the self adjusting brakes. Maybe that`s a good thing! I have heard mine make a slight squeeling noise when leaving the CG at slow speed but it always goes away. Perhaps that`s because I backed up with the connector plugged in.

healthi , Thats the way our 2010 19bh is , Ive read you post about it a year or so ago, we have had ours back twice , just picked it up last week and the dealers tech said we had no problem , then we hooked up went about 10 feet squeaking all way .the tech came out and followed along the trailer and said we have no problem the brakes are fine , Ive been a mechanic my whole life and I cant believe there is nothing wrong . When driving I keep close eye on our brake temps with an infer red thermometer when we stop. Left front wheel is around 25 degrees warmer than the others , not too far out of lines with the others , let me know what happens ,

Sounds like the shoes are dragging all the time, even if only a little, by Kipper and healthi`s posts saying the noise is constant.

If self adjusting brakes are working properly they will not get to tight. Most self adjusting problems are that the brakes don't self adjust.

We've never checked the temp on the brakes. How do you do it?

We will definitely post the next update!

Man, I'm kinda glad I have an 09 right about now!

Really though, I'm glad Jayco is working with ya'll to fix this issue.

Before I start my season in June I'm getting the brakes inspected, tires balanced, axles checked and lubed, re-grease the Hensley and make it look purty, check the China bomb tires, and give her a good coat of 303.

One time, I saw an 18 wheeler with one trailer tire turning more slowly than the rest. Needless to say, the tire was smoking. Don't know why the driver didn't see it. He didn't get too far down the road, and that tire blew out. Sure hope no one experiences that with their Jayco. Having said that, I'm certain Jayco will do their very best to resolve the problem.

Hey David, Iv'e seen a TT going down the road with one of the tires ON FIRE- and the driver had NO idea this was happening. I honked my horn at him and signaled to pull over NOW! We put it out, but it did some damage. Could have been way worse though.

P.S. I hope I'm not scaring anyone with a 10' model!

I've had my rig in twice for this noise, and both times they inspected all wheels and did some tweaks and said noise was gone. Both times I gave them a copy of this thread. They also said everything looked fine. I heard the noise as soon as I got home. The dealer is about 1/ 1/2 hours away, so not a cheap trip. It'll be going back before the warranty is up in the fall.

I presume the trailer brakes are the drum type, rather than disk type. Drum brakes are the design which often incorporate self adjusters. Rubbing noises in drum brakes indicate an interference problem. It's quite possible, the noise is from the edge of the brake shoe rubbing on the vertical surface of the drum. This is a guess on my part. If this guess has merit, then the condition would not impare the stopping ability of the brakes. It could, however, result in the brake shoe becoming warped, and the drum becoming scored. Both would mean an early replacement of the brake system. These are my thoughts on a possible explanation, not a statement of the actual condition.

Hope your 2010 models can be resolved. Next week, we bring home our new 22FB, 2011 model. Am curious if we will experience the same brake situation. Time will tell.

The brakes on our 33rlds were making really bad noises, took it in and the spring broke that is by the adjuster and the adjuster fell out. Went down to look at it and to my surprize it did not do any damage to the drum. Only problem is that it is taking a really long time to find the parts to fix. Had to cancel our trip for next week. Really not a happy camper right now. Hopefully they will have it fixed and the DW and I get get on camping. Later Ernie

Wow....a broken spring. That should just not happen. The spring must not have been tempered properly.

I use a non contact thermometer , when I pull into a rest stop just aim at the wheel and you get a temp . Do all four wheels they should be around the same readings , if one is alot hotter there may be a problem .

This is like what I use,

Kipper! Ironic... I showed your post to Don. He showed me the HF ad that came in the mail yesterday. He has been wanting to get the laser gun thermometer. He never considered using one of those to check the heat of the wheel! So, looks like we will be getting a non-contact thermometer. Thanks for the suggestion!
