Favorite Michigan Campgrounds

We are working on filling up our 2015 camping schedule and thinking about trying some new campgrounds in MI. Which one's are your favorites and why?

I like the Sleeping Bear Dunes area, near Traverse City.

State Parks are our favorite but anything close to nature and hiking trails works.

You're in Muskegon so one of my favorites but one of the hardest to get into is Ludington State Park. My personal favorite is Otsego Lake State Park up near Gaylord. For private, F/S, parks I like Duck Creek RV in Muskegon : http://www.duckcreekrvresort.com/index.html

I have camped at almost every state campground in MI during my 40+ years of camping. I can tell you about almost any state park if you have questions about them.

Welcome to the JOF! I really like Clear Lake State Park near Atlanta, MI. They upgraded their electrical system last summer, and it is really nice. Holly State Rec. Area and Pontiac Lake State Rec. Area are also great options on the other side of the state. A little closer to your home, Ionia State Rec. Area is very nice. You can see my review in the Michigan Campers & Campgrounds social group.

I'd be really interested in some from the UP. I'm not nearly as familiar with campgrounds UP there.

Hi neighbors, if you like nature and wilderness then tryout Lake Michigan Recreation campground between Ludington and Manistee. Its rustic but has huge sites with a paved pad. Another place close to us is Claybanks Township campground on Lake Michigan. A lot of sites have electric and the sites are $20 a night.

There is a nice state campground in Baraga in the U.P. We have stayed there and you can get to just about anywhere in the U.P. from there within a few hours. from porcupine mountains to the tip in copper harbor to the east at sault saint marie. It's about in the middle of the U.P. Take a week or more and enjoy the wonderful country the U.P. has to offer. You won't regret it.

I usually camp there in the fall (early October) when two of the four loops open.

My favorite Michigan parks are as follows:

1. Ludington State park (book your sites as early as possible, 6mo in advance)

2. Yankee Springs St park (Gun Lake unit)

3. Indian lake St park (in the up)

4. Porqupine MTN state park (union bay campground)

5. Straights St park (on the up side of the bridge, with a bridge view)

6. Mackinaw Mill creek (private cg with full hook ups, in the LP)

7. Tri-Ponds family camp ground (private cg with full hook ups, near Allegan, in the LP)

8. North Higgins Lake State park (in the LP)

9. Wilderness State park (in the LP)

10. Lakeview Campsite (in Ludington on upper Hamlin lake, private CG)

My goal is to camp at least 2 nights at each of the "modern" michigan state park campgrounds. The modern CGs will have flush toilets and showers, and electric at each site. Also, some of the Michigan state parks now have full hook ups, however, i dont think any above hartwick pines (near grayling) have them. There are very few private campgrounds I have found I like. IMO the state CGs are nicer when it comes to facilities... My favorite campground (hands down) is Camper Village at Cedar Point (in Ohio). Every site is full hook up and paved. It is by far the cleanest campground I have ever camped at and there is plenty to do while your there. Although not the cheepest camping, it is my favorite.

Thanks for mentioning Baraga State Park - it brought back good memories of camping there with my mother about 10 years ago. It is probably the most "centrally located", and is a nice park. The O.P. might also want to check out Tahquamenon Falls St. Park., but make your reservation early there, as well.

We love Munising Tourist Park! It is just west of Munising right on Lake Superior. They have full hook ups and water and electric sites right on the water!! There are numerous waterfalls that you can hike to. Close to the Amazing Log Slide. It is only 30-45 minutes from Marquette.

Petoskey KOA is very nice. Spotless and easy to get to a lot of places if you are adventurous.
