How much time do you have for this trip? There is so much to see depending on the route, that it is hard to say, without a time estimate.

Since you want to be in Astoria OR for a visit, you might want to change plans. Beeline for Astoria, visit your son for a few days. Than head south down the coast. When you run out of time you could turn east and leave the rest of the west coast for another time. The southern part of OR you will need to find your way to Reno NV/Winnemucca NV to catch I 80 back east. Unless you are thrill seekers you might stay away from Doherty Slide in eastern OR hwy 140. Not a bad road but a narrow 6% thrill hill to drive. (visit youtube) It took us 4 /7 hr driving days to come home from Illinois last Aug/Sept. The last night we stopped only 100 miles from home, but we were done for the day. I would love to have the time to drive back east again and see more of the sights. Have fun in your travels.

What Duke said would certainly be a reasonable option.
Since you are already in Astoria, I would not worry too much about driving the coast. You can always do day trips from Astoria and see about as much ocean as want too.

I-70 might be a good option. You would cross the rocky mountains in Colorado and get some nice scenery. Then into the desert landscapes of eastern Utah for a totally different environment. Once you reach Salt Lake City you could decide to either take 80 across the salt flats or take 84 through the Columbia river gorge.
