Help me plan a trip to South Dakota

Best I can figure right now would be early/mid May 2018

I want to do the SD resident thing and get a SD drivers license.
Truck and trailer are now SD registered.
I shiver about having a driver's license from one state, and both my vehicles have SD registration.

Leaving from Las Vegas on no particular time table and no rush.
Prefer State highways over interstates.
Mountain grades no problem for the Cummins.
Prefer National Forest service campgrounds over private RV parks, although an RV park is not out of the question.
Dirt camping experience with solar and inverter. Hookups, although convenient, no requirement for them.

I have never ever been east of the Rockies.....is early/mid May to early?

Rapid City SD seems the best deal.....first "larger" town to get the driver's license after one over nighter.
Mail forwarding agency recommendations?
I was told by one of their representatives that I could get all the mail forwarded or none at all?....experienced folks chime in please.

Seems I would have to drop the Medicare Complete plan and get a different supplement plan. If United Health care sniffed out I was not in their plans coverage area, I am sure they would cancel the HMO plan. It requires I be a resident of where I get service.

Hoping the nut jobs don't blow up Mt Rushmore before then!!

We are leaving on Sunday for 4 nights at Sage Creek (Badlands - free boondocking) and then 5 nights at Custer State Park (Game Lodge) before heading to Yellowstone. We are coming from the East though (Toronto).

We stayed at both Sage and Custer last fall and thought both were great.

We did two nights at Sage Creek and both mornings we had bison roaming past the trailer (within 100 feet). You can get water and use the dump station at Cedar Pass if coming from the East. Sage is about 15 miles from Wall and I90.

Custer State Park is convenient to Rushmore/Crazy Horse and Rapid City. Needles Hwy was pretty cool as well.

Or in the Badlands stay at Sage Creek Campground. No electric, no water, but it is free and one of our favorite places.
