Salt Springs Recreation Area, FL

Spent 11 nights at Salt Springs Recreation Area with daughter, son-in-law and 5 grand kids.
This is a very good park. Open with some shade. The restrooms are extremely clean.

The sites are spaced out pretty well with enough room for a big RV and truck but that is all. No parking on the grass so if you have a extra trailer or extra cars you must park in over flow.

This Ocala FL area is a good place to go if you like to paddle.

I will add more when I get a chance.

We had our own kayaks but there's many places where you can rent them.
We paddled the Silver River, Ocklawaha River, Juniper Springs and the Rainbow River.

Silver River had alligators, monkeys and many many birds. We also seen some manatees.

We scouted it out a few years back. Have not been able to get in there in February in a few years. Just looked at the online reservation a week ago. It is a nice place!

Like most places in FL it fills up fast. You can make reservations 6 months out with this park.

I will post more pictures when my daughter gets them to me.

Have paddled those many a time and base camp at Juniper Springs.
It does NOT have hookups. Its probably the nicest campground in Florida. It fills on weekends. You can drive in otherwise. So reservations needed is not a given.
If you dont mind true boondocking there are a multitude of campgrounds in Ocala National Forest that you just drive in and pay on the honor system. They are all on dirt roads. The one down the road from Salt has a hand pump which might be offputting to some for water

. Others are south of Juniper in Ocala NF.

A few years ago we picnicked at Juniper. The raccoons were so bad you had to stand guard. You couldn't even turn your back or they would be in your food.

I was trying to look back at my records it was in 2008 I think.
The little bandits were so funny. They would sit in the woods and watch. As soon as someone put there things down and turned there back to go to the springs out they would run. They were good to. Could open a cooler or box fast.

Great pics! Do you take a second vehicle to tow the small kayak trailer or do you double tow? Looks like a lot of fun. I just got a couple “yaks” myself. Nothing fancy, just some cheap recreational kayaks that I’m modding up

I fixed up my utility trailer for son-in-law to haul there bike's and kayaks. My wife has medical issues and can not paddle so I have a tandem kayak I carry on Thule rack and goalpost.
We go down to central FL at spring break every year and paddle for the week.
Having two vehicles makes it good so we can shuttle from put in to take out.
With a little planning it can be a lot of fun down there.
I had the most fun at the Rainbow River. We left the little one and my wife at the camp. Son-in-law, daughter, 9 and 12 year old grandsons and myself paddled up the Rainbow and snorkeled back down for about 1 1/2 miles. Daughter pulled the kayaks and followed us down. It was super cool. Water was cold but very doable on a sunny day.
