How early in the year can you get into those areas? We head back to Ontario end of Apr each winter but have been slowly extending it so we can stop at places that get snow. Did Grand Canyon, Mon Valley & Moab last spring.

All depends on how much snow we get. That site is at approximately 7,800 ft. The mountains got about 500” this past winter. This year there was probably 10 feet of snow there in late April Road doesn’t open till June 1. Lots of lower elevation areas that are nice in May.

I've found that finding available campsites at Michigan 'rustic' campgrounds (State & Federal) hasn't been a problem during the past 2020/2021 summers..., especially during the weekdays.
Here are a couple rustic camping pics from 2020 & 2021........, hope to get a few boondocking trips in this summer (2022).
Brevoort Lake Campground (Michigan UP 2020), no electric or water at sites.
https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/hiaw...a/?recid=13292
Had a nice lakefront site with a path to the lake..........
Brevoort Lake.......
Monument Campground (Michigan Lower 2021), no electric or water at sites.
https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/hmnf...a/?recid=18836
A forest fire 'almost' went through the campground..., but a lot of trees on one side of the campground have been marked for cutting due to fire damage. I wasn't camping at the CG when the fire took place.

So great to see this thread brought back to life !!!!
These are San Rafael Swell - Utah. Camped at the Little Grand Canyon overlook.
We are camped above the river a ways, The pic of the San Rafael River was just after us crossing it in the Toyota... It is the same river you see in the pictures at the bottom of the canyon.

Boondocking is camping without any hookups outside developed campgrounds. Dry camping is camping without hookups in a CG.

The middle of a forest miles from paved roads with only your batteries for power and the water you have on board is “boon-docking”.

You know it, you love it, Nomad View
Just outside of Badlands National Park. Unbeatable boondocking experience.

I believe that one's boondocking experience can very, including the surroundings one is camped in.
"Sometimes referred to as “dry camping,” boondocking is any time you camp in your RV without water, sewer, or electrical connections. That can take the form of parking your rig deep in the backcountry or pulling over at a highway rest stop."
All boondocking photos welcome in this thread.

Darland Mountain, Yakima, WA
They said it couldn't be done. They said the last five miles were some of the roughest jeep trail you ever saw. And they were RIGHT. Yet the wife and I managed to haul our 17-foot M210 to the summit of the second-highest place you can drive to in Washington State.
Darland Mountain. Sometimes we were moving a lot slower than you can walk, but we made it. From this viewpoint, you can see from Mt. Hood down in Oregon all the way up to Mt. Baker in northern Washington. Some pictures below, plus a link to the video. July 22-25, 2022.
(NOTE: Trailer has been slightly modified. We removed the big cabinet and the bunkbed unit in the rear bed area, to make a real bedroom out of it. We also added a solar panel and a fourth 100-amp hour battery to the system, and I wired in a second AC inverter. We pack a generator but seldom have to use it. TV/DVD combos installed near dining area, and on the front wall of the rear bed area. For media in the walled canopy, we hang a ten foot screen on one wall and use a media projector. For TV in the canopy, I just run a long cable extension from the trailer to the canopy. Eight out of ten trips we are dry camping. I also found out it is easier to refill your water tank if you use the pump and hose from one of those portable battery-powered shower kits. You just drop the pump into your spare water containers and run the hose into the fresh water tank inlet. Easier than trying to refill using a funnel or something.)

Wow..., and I agree it takes the right set-up to navigate to a spot with the long distance views you experienced in the photos.
