2023 Jayco Model Changes

Last night I see Jayco has updated new 2023 models. I scanned through a number of campers. Generally speaking the campers are the same old thing. A few new models are listed. I did not see the new 4x4 Seneca or Volare. Pinnacles & North Points you have a choice of axles with hydraulic disc brakes. I did not see this as an option on any of the models I looked at.

The big change is the new solar options has greatly improved, at least I think it is a big step up. The price is on some are crazy high (ouch). Pinnacles and North Points having the most solar options;

Overlander 1 Solar Package ($593):
  • (1) 200W Solar Panel
  • 30 amp digital controller
Overlander 2 Solar Package ($1,943):
  • (2) 200W solar panels
  • 30 amp controller
  • (1) 800W inverter
Overlander 4 Solar Package ($14,093):
  • (4) 200W solar panels,
  • (2) 100-amp/hour lithium heated batteries
  • 60 amp controller
  • 3000W inverter
  • DC/DC power converter
  • Soft start power save main 15K AC
  • Battery Monitor
  • Energy management system
  • Roof pre-wired for additional solar panels
  • Generator prep capable
  • Heavy gauge steel battery enclosure
Overlander EXT Solar Package ($21,750):
  • 3000W inverter/charger with internal 50 amp transfer switch
  • Energy management system
  • (6) 200W solar panels
  • (6) 100 amp/hour lithium heated batteries
  • 12V DC AC in bedroom
  • DC to DC battery charger
  • 100-amp MPPT controller management
  • Generator prep capable

You can say "arm and a leg" again, lol. Solar company is finishing out solar install today at home, installing 56 400W panels. Just over 61K before the tax credit!

thats about in line for a home solar set up. i did 30 400W in 2019 at 30K. after Tax credits it cost me about 22K... You will fall in love with your new bill. Ours is basically taxes that we pay annual. last year bill, for year total was $217. Before Solar our electric bill ran between $300-$400 monthly

I sure hope so. The current credit is 26% but our socialist brothers and the "inflation reduction act" brought back the 30% credit, so I will file that next year. Should end up around 43K net. Looking forward to very low power bills. Final inspection is next, and then Duke Power installs a new fancy "smart" meter, and we should be good. We are running over $450/ month in July/August as it has been so hot.

wish we could get that kind of credit in our RV's for solar install. I looked into it and credit cant be applied towards an RV.. 30% is a good grab,, take every penny you can get back.. we deserve it

Before we can seriously consider solar, we need a new roof (Probably 5 years out).

I have always wondered, if there was a way when parked at home to tie an RV solar grid back into a home grid.

I would assume, it would work similarly to having cells on the SB house roof, and additional cells on a detached garage. Both systems I suspect need the same voltage, would need at least one disconnect, and a solar shore power cable to connect to the home grid. Really should not be to hard to do.

Lol, I plan to
I think based on current rates, obviously subject to change, I am looking right at 12 years.

Kirkelli and Jetlag, did you also get batteries (tesla powerwall), or just the solar panels?

It sounds like you are in CA and that they might give good incentives for the selling back of unused power. Here in AZ we don't get good exchange for the excess, its a 3 to 1. Meaning we give 3 and they give 1 credit back. It makes more sense for us to get enough battery to store and then run everything as if we were off grid, even for night use as it does not equal out otherwise. But by adding those into the price mix it goes up exponentially and makes it still somewhat better (considering battery tech changes almost daily) to stay on shore power for now. The numbers still have not been there yet for us.... as your paying for it one way or another. (pre paid with solar or post paid with shore power)

We are in NC, as of right now, Duke power gives us a 1 for 1, but the rascals are trying to change it. If they do, we are grandfathered for I think 10 years. I passed on the power walls for now. That was another 16K I think for 2 of them, and highly discounted according to the salesperson, lol. We have a 30KW propane generator here at the farm and I thought I might wait a bit to let me absorb how much I paid for this system! I do want them because if power goes out, and typically around here it is hurricanes, you are totally in the dark. Yes, we have the Genny, but propane is expensive these days.

5 to 6 years for us.. but more then likely less then 5 years because we run the AC a lot ore than we did prior to Solar.. I also installed a separate AC unit in the garage. Love having the chilly man cave, so do my neighbors.

Well, you could but may not be worth much... For example, my RV has 1260 watts worth of panels providing about 100 amps of power.. More than enough for the RV. My home solar has about 10,000 watts worth of panels providing 800 amps of current. The issue with RV's, there is not enough real-estate to place the amount of panels you would need for home usage.

Your new roof??? i would place all your solar mounting than have an RV Roof coating placed over your current membrane. One like Flex Armer. So much more durable and will last forever. I replaced my membrane last summer and already seeing some issues with swelling. I wish i would have done the Flex Armer in the first place.

I am in Calif and actually sell power back to SCE, they in return credit that towards our usage and nothing more. With our usage, our bill consist of taxes only which we have to pay by law. Here in Calif, you dont want to overbuild your solar system, otherwise you end up 'giving' power back.. I'm sure we are giving some back but at least if we have a major hot spell, (and we have) we can run the AC 24/7 and not have to pay at the end.. We use the heck out of power. Besides our home, we have a shop with two welders, AC, fridges, all kinds of powers tools and never had to pay more than our taxes. When we where in Sacramento our highest electric bill during a hot spell was around $800... i dont think the trend is around anymore using batteries for home solar unless you have no power hookups. For now, it works better to sell back to the power company. Not sure how it works for Jetlag

Thanks, and that makes sense.
For us here in AZ we are on SRP and due to the lack of 1 for 1 exchange you have to either make more during the mid day (most productive) and sell back more to them (the 3 to 1 exchange). Or you store your own energy. Thankfully for our house even mid summer the high bill is only $300. Its over 3000sqft and I work from home, so we are always here (when not RVing). Keep temp at 77. At our inflated and conservative average rate ($190) doing the math for 12kwh in panels and two tesla walls it is 15 years before we get RTO. (cost from Tesla for system after rebate is $33,500) We would then have a connection fee of like $50 and taxes each month. You would think they would want your "free energy" and be fair on the exchange in a place that gets more sun than most areas. But they just dont want to be fair about it. These costs are not taking into count for any other needed items/costs. I would not see the RTO as I do not want to be here in 15+ years. To me the costs need to come down more to make it feasible, or our power cost have to go up a lot... which I hope does not happen.

The solar folks calculated our average power bill based on KW used and going rates at $297/month. That is sure to go up unfortunately. We have added a second freezer in the garage downstairs recently as we grow and freeze lots of veggies as well as storing some meats. We have a large commercial cooler down there as well, our old home fridge/freezer and ice maker. A climate control room with a mini split which runs through the summer keeping onions and potatoes as long as we can. The RV with 50A all the time, and 3 electric heaters in the winter to keep it warm. Like Kirkrlli says, I think our payback will come sooner.
Forgot, also a larger wine cooler running in the garage.

As I mentioned earlier, for us it is still 1 for 1 with Duke Power, although they are thinking of changing it. We are grandfathered in for 10 years if they change. We have three AC units, just replaced one, and heat the house/heat water/ clothes dryer/cook with propane. It used to be lot cheaper than electricity and that is changing unfortunately for us. It is easy to replace an AC unit, but not the entire AC/heating system to switch to the heat pumps Biden is pushing these days.

If you want to grind a political ax there are forums where they do that, this isn't one of them.
