Propane tank weight?

Does anyone know the weight of a:

5 gallon tank, empty / full?

7.5 gallon tank empty / full?

Seems like the essayist way to tell how much propane I have left.

Thanks in advance.

For the 5 gallon tanks - 17 lbs empty, 37 lbs full.. approximately.

Not sure about the larger tanks, but google knows

If you will look closely at the numbers stamped into the metal collar surrounding the fill valve. Yoou will see the specific weights of the bottle, both full & empty.... Swampy

Watch out for the pre-filled tanks at stores. They only put in 15 pounds (just so you won't hurt yourself lifting them) LOL ( not to make more profit)

I just looked at the collar on my 30lb tank and the empty tare weight (TW) of 23.3lb is listed, but I don't see the full weight of ~53lbs listed. It has a "WC 71.5lb" value stamped but that is too heavy for the full tank so I'm not sure what that value refers to. I always weigh the tank to verify how much propane is left. Just filled this one up today and it weighs right at the 53lb I would expect with 7g of propane in it.

WC indicates "water capacity" not sure why instead of by cubic feet. Just indicates what it would hold in terms of volume.

OK - Google tells me this regarding the regulations:

"regulations limit propane fill levels not to exceed 42% of the water capacity of the tank. A typical gas grill tank holds 47 pounds of water, which converts to 19 3/4 pounds of propane. In other words, a propane tank that will hold 47 pounds of water will hold a safe-fill maximum net weight of 19 3/4 pounds of propane."

So a 30lb tank can hold 71.5lbs of water (~8.6gal) of which 42% yields the 30lbs of propane it's allowed to be filled with.

Thanks for the pointer RogerR!

I have a handheld fish scale I use to weigh my tanks right in place. I don't even unhook the gas line, just unstrap it, hook the scale on and pick it up a Half inch. Close enough to get a good idea how much propane is in it.
