Skyroam Solis X WiFi

Is this any good? If not what is a good way to go? A WiFi booster which is the best one to purchase? Any help is much appreciated.

Why not just hotspot off of your existing phone?

Well it slows down after a bit with the plan I have and sometimes it is really really slow when I setup as a hot spot to scan the internet to pay bills on line or check my email. Also a pain to stream a movie or watch a ball game keep waiting for a few minutes to load the next part. Hate it when I miss a grand slam or touchdown. Arrrg.

But, isn't that a function of the cell connection, not the WiFi? The WiFi strength is only as good as the original source. Isn't that Solis just another cell connection?

Many of us have installed cellular boosters in our rigs, to increase the cell reception, which helps the hotspot WiFi from our phones.

I have an EnGenius that I use in “Client Bridge” mode (IIRC) and it works great. But in practice it’s not of much use. It’s dependent on the WiFi that it connects to. Most CG wifi’s are poor to worthless in my experience. The EnGenius can connect to a WiFi over long distances but I seldom find one. In a CG with several AP’s I get some success attaching to the “clubhouse” or “office” AP, sometimes not. It’s a crap shoot but if the unit you are looking at is priced right, get it and you can use it from time to time.

On a related note: I think the traditional ISP’s for home/personal use days are numbered and will be replaced by cellular internet access. There’s many places where I try to use a local “free” WiFi only to revert to my cell because I get better performance. I think “unlimited” data will soon be the norm and will be made “somewhat” affordable. We don’t boondock so the places we travel there’s usually cell. Starting to think a cell booster would be more useful tho they’re still pricey.

Thank you for the input. I do appreciate the info.
