Toyota Tundra Tow Vehicle
Interested in hearing from any of you towing with a Toyota Tundra with the Hemi engine. My friend has a 2013 4 door model with the Hemi engine and is interested in pulling a 2015 Jayco Eagle HT 27.5 RLTS. Dry weight is around 7900 pounds. Anyone with input.
Thanks,
Joe Hinson

I think you mean to say or a Ram with a Hemi engine. Hemi is dodge not Toyota.
I tow a eagle 284bhs 6600 lbs dry with a crew max tundra pulls great.

Love my Tundra to pull my TT, however pin weight of a 5th wheel will be way over payload rating for a Tundra.

Depends on the rig..Ive seen a number of 5w being towed by a tundra...they are 1/2 ton rated units. I towed my last thor dry weight of 6400 lbs all over the Rockies with never an issue. I love my Tundra.

Joe, the towing capacity on my 11 Tundra is 10,300 lbs.. not sure of tongue weight etc, don't have the book in here. I have the towing package, double cab and big engine...my gross was about 8000 and never an issue even in the Rockies.. Even uphill never had an issue with keeping speed. just my 2cents

The limiting factor is the pin weight of the fiver. Pay very close attention to this. The December 2014 issue of Trailer Life magazine covers this quite well.

I love my Tundra. Hemi refers to the design of the engine, not the fact its a 5.7 liter engine.
7900 lbs dry is likely closer to 9000 lbs loaded. That is at the upper end of what the Tundra can safely handle. The problem your friend will have is payload with a 5er. About 20% of the weight +/- is on the hitch, so that is 1800lbs hitch weight. I don't know of any Tundra double cab or Crewmax that has 1800 lbs of available payload. Most are in the 1600 or less category. Then once you add a 5th wheel hitch in the bed (more weight) and passengers or any gear in the truck (even more weight) you are significantly over weight.
I usually go to Florida ever winter for a few months. There are 2 guys that tow lite 5ers from the Midwest to Florida every year. They both put air bags in the back to keep in level and say they have no problems towing or handling.
I wouldn't want to do it myself though. If you want a 5er, you really need at least a 3/4 ton truck in my opinion.

I towed a FR Rockwood 5th wheel with my Tundra Crewmax 5.7. Towing isn't the issue; it's the payload. It pulled the 9000lb 5er from Florida to Wyoming to Niagara and back. Pulled it like it wasn't back there. The payload capacity was another issue altogether. "Advertised" pin weight was 1148. Whenever I would hit an bad expansion joint it would buck like crazy; scary feeling. Went to weight it and pin was closer to 1800lbs, and I was not over packed in any way shape or form. Many will tell you it's ok and it will handle it, but I opted out.
Bottom line is when shopping for a 5er, the advertised pin weight cannot be trusted. Just keep that in mind when shopping.

We have been looking at trucks. We really like Toyota, and many family members have Tundras. As others have said payload is the Tundra's problem. If they come up with a heavy payload option there is no doubt that will be the truck for us.

Sure they did. Now if you try to tow that and break something on the truck see if TOYota will cover it under warranty..

We have a Tundra so I researched what it could tow a lot. I feel like we are flirting with the line with what we got. I did see some people on the Tundra forum make some mods to pull 5th wheels like redoing the suspension. you would have to check over there. I can't testify to how it pulls for us because our TT is still on order but I read a ton of people towing rigs similar to ours that said it didn't great. What you are talking about it a decent chunk heavier though.

And therein lies the problem of towing a 5th wheel with a 1/2 ton truck. It can tow the space shuttle but it can't carry it.

Looking at the tag on my Tundra (2011) the payload capacity is 1870 lbs, towing load 10,100 lbs. Typically when I tow, i have little in my TV, maybe 700 lbs including wife and "stuff". As I have said before no issue towing in Colorado Rockies. Campgrounds I have worked in I have seen Cougar 5w being towed by the same vehicle. They are 1/2 rated and, speaking with the owners said they had no issue towing the 5w in the mountains either...FWIW

Just checked Cougar specs. On the 25RKS the hitch weight is 1125. so with a light load in the truck you could haul it with out exceeding the limits ( perhaps pushing them a little) . This is an Xlite rig.
A 28SGS with three slide outs the hitch weight is 1410..
Guess this means, yes you can tow a 5W with a Tundra, but you have to watch what your towing so you don't exceed the capacity.

The yellow tag on your B pillar says 1870 lbs? Or the tow guide says a MAX of 1870 lbs. Those are 2 VERY different numbers. I have never seen a doublecab in real life that had more than about 1600 lbs. I have very few options on my Tundra and am at 1584 or something like that.

Your right, I missed the little tag says due to modifications your capacity has been reduced by 49 Lbs.. making the actual load capacity at 1821 lbs.
