Virginia Open Campgrounds in March?
In Early March, we're leaving for our spring trip from Upstate NY to Florida. I'm having trouble locating an open campground in Northern/Central Virginia. Does Anyone know of any campground where we can stay for the night off of rte 95 or 81?

I believe Bethpage Camp Resort is open year round. Very nice CG.

They post rates starting on April 1. Leads me to believe they're not open around March. Plus I'm looking for a cheap CG that we can crash for the night - This CG promotes itself as a resort with nightly rates $45+. Thanks anyways.

Hi Frenchie,
Probably way out of your way, but our default stop between Buffalo and Florida is Wytheville KOA. We've stayed there in February.

Good luck finding anything cheap in Northern VA! If you are taking 81 and just looking for a place to sleep, check with the Cabela's in Bristol VA - I have been told Cabela's allows overnight camping in their parking lots and some have dump stations for free... Can't get cheaper than that...

Walnut Hills KOA below Staunton VA is open year round. It is located a couple miles from the highway and has very nice facilities.

Va state parks are open from the First Friday in March onwards. Pocohantas state park outside Richmond is a good park with alot of amenities depending on what you want. Also Lake Anna State Park is another good one but does not have as many campsites. Look here for more information: Virginia State Parks. Avoid the DC area at all costs as there are several ways to bypass it.

Some do have specific RV pull through parking sites and the dump stations are pay as you dump and avg $5.00. No fee to park though and again check as local laws prohibit in certain locations.
Cabellas in PA off rt78 does have overnight and a dump station.

Shenandoah Valley Campground LLC is right off 81 and in about 9hrs from you. Open year round. Easy on off and pull though level sites. It's private and rates are resonable for proximity to 81. Any size rig can fit. I was in and connected fully with room to spare.
Good Sam discount if you are a member.

This past June we were heading to Nashville from upstate NY via I-81. We wound up overnighting in Winchester VA at a Best Western which was about 500 feet from the I-81. We got a senior rate from Expedia for $65. They had plenty of room to park many RVs and tractor trailers. They even had a Perkins restaurant onsite with great senior rates.

Candy Hill (off I-81, near Winchester) is open year round. Big pull-through sites. Stayed there once. It was a decent place to stay, but didn't really WOW me.
Candy Hill Campground
It's a little further south, but you could try North Bend Park (border of VA and NC on Kerr Reservoir) which is only about 17 total miles out of the way when going down I-95 south (take I-85 south at Richmond and then cut back to I-95 using Rt. 1 south of the park). It's open year round, with really cheap sites and first-come and limited service during the off-season. We stayed there once on a trip to FL ourselves -- just try getting out of the DC area during rush hour on a Friday and see if you get any further than the border before you need to stop for the night. Recreation.gov says it's closed, but it's actually not, just the reservation service is closed. Call to verify, however.
