Water Pump Question

We went camping over the weekend without city water, so we filled the fresh water tank, however, I noticed that the water pump runs for a few seconds every couple of minutes even if we're not using any water. Is that normal or does that mean I have a leak in the line somewhere? I know it's supposed to come on and pressurize to 45 psi, however, to me it seems as though it shouldn't run again until we start using water? Can someone shed some light? Thanks in advance.

Could be a small leak.

I think its normal. As the pump is quite a drain on the electric if we are not using water we turn the pump off.
But yes you could have a leak

Yeah, we left the pump off most of the time, however, it's just something I noticed when we first got there and turned the pump on. Once it started cycling every few minutes, we turned it off until we needed water. I'm assuming it's ok to turn the pump on and off numerous times a day without hurting it?

Could be an actual leak, but it could also just indicate that the check valve isn't holding tight and you have a little bit of back-flow.

Has to be a leak or the internal check valve leaking a bit. Ours will not pump at all indefinitely until we use some water to drop the pressure.

Cheers

Two things I've had in the past that have caused this that might be worth checking:

1. Check your hot water tank. I noticed a small drip coming from my drain valve after putting it back on. Just needed to use a pair of grips and give it an extra half turn and this sealed the drip.

2. Toilet - If you get even a tiny bit of toilet paper stuck to the flap, it won't create a seal and you'll end up with a small drip into the black tank. This happens to me at least once per season.

Seems to me if there was a leak there would be water dripping somewhere, especially since it should occur when hooked to city water as well.

My water pump doesn't cycle very often, but when it does I have always attributed it to expansion/contraction of the air in the hot water tank.

Cycling every few minutes is excessive and certainly a sign something is amiss.

We had ours on all weekend and it wouldn't kick on unless a valve was opened and water was flowing.

I would check for leaks as it is a strong sign that it is leaking somewhere. I would start where the valve is for winterizing the system is. Make sure it is closed fully. If none are found then it is possible that there is a leak on the pump check valve so water is working back into the fresh water tank. I guess one way to test this if you can't find it anywhere else is to drain your FW tank then close the dump valve for the tank. Then hook up to your city water port and pressurize the system. Let it sit for several hours or a day or two since it may be a slow leak. Now open the FW dump valve and see if any water comes out. If it does then the check valve is leaking.

There is another check valve on the city water connection. If leaking here you will see water coming out of the port when running off the pump.

Another vote for check valve. If you r sure there is no leak or open valve, it pump check valve could be ur issue.
