Why do they put covers over tires?

We don't do it on cars or trucks that live outside.

I use to protect from sun damage. Probably should for autos as well, but pain to constant remove on a vehicle used daily.

Because in most cases, before UV has time to deteriorate car and truck tires you've driven the tread off. RV tires are rarely worn out from the road but age out and UV accelerates that. Were most tires made of natural rubber instead of synthetics it would be different. Today mostly only aircraft use natural rubber tires, synthetic rubber will not withstand the sudden temperature changes from high altitude to sea level.

Another concern is that an RV that sits for a long period of time (autos too for that matter) will deflate (loose air pressure), which can also cause the sidewalls to crack.

Gotta be honest with yourself...how often to you check your tire pressures in all your vehicles? Most do it for their RV's only when they get ready to use it. When they are not camping, the RV sits, and rarely do the tires get checked. I was guilty of that when I used a storage facility. Now that the RV is parked at home, it gets checked at least once a month along with all my other vehicles.

My current car sends me an email once a week telling me my tire pressure (uconnect with Dodge).

Covers will help in blocking UV, but do not help in pressure being lost.

A lot of RV tires are very poor quality also (China) and age will play a huge factor in reliability.

I would not run a Chinese tire more than 5 years max. regardless of tread depth or weathering. Believe me I know why first hand.
I run only Goodyear's now.

Where I live I put them on for the winter months to protect from sun damage and weather, that is snow and ice. And to protect the steel wheels from premature rusting.

Prior to doing this, I was getting ozone cracks within 3-4 years. After doing it I was getting 6-7 years out of them. Doesn't matter who makes them. I've used a lot of different brands over the years, mostly due availability, or lack of it.
