What was your first computer?

Mine was an IBM PC fully tricked out with two full height floppies. I later upgraded it to two half height floppies (in one bay) and a 10MB hard drive; also installed a larger power supply at the same time. The hard drive really sped things up, and of course was too big to ever fill up. I had a nifty green screen monitor.

I had a Commodore 64 but didn't really know how to use it other than making lines of text do dumb things. My first real PC was a Packard Bell I bought around 1992.

Commodore +4 (a freebie) followed very shortly afterward by a Commodore C64c. My next ones were a Gateway XP, Acer XP (sorriest piece of junk I ever owned), and the Win 7 machine I built and presently use. There were also a string of three XP netbooks, followed by the three win 7 notebooks I now have.

The first computer I used was my older brother's IBM PC, 8088 processor, two floppies and no hard drive, CGA graphics, circa early 1980's. My first computer was a second-hand 386 I bought from a buddy who cannibalized it for parts, so it came with no hard drive, memory or monitor. I've been upgrading it ever since.

Commodore 64, TRS80, IBM clone with DOS 3.1, various PC's and laptops since then and now on a iMAC 27" with 16G memory and 1TB hard drive with 500g backup and Compaq desktop for my laser...

Also didn't realize I was a hacker back in the 90's.. Worked for a company that would get service contracts to service PBX (big company phone systems). Many times we couldn't get the login code. It was only 4 digits and were only numerals. So I wrote my first basic program using a 1200 baud modem to dial up the systems and input the password starting at 0000 and going until the password got in... It was fun and made $25.00 for my efforts... woo hoo.... Strictly legal of course since the systems were privately owned and we did have a signed contract.

Desktop: "Adam", but the quality was horrid
Portable: Zenith luggable
Had an early Mac that became our young son's first computer (with kid software) until it truly died (he loved watching the bomb explode).

Zeos 386sx-16, 2MB RAM, 80MB(? maybe 60) Hard drive.

I was in high school. Purchased with a loan from the bank for $2,000 for which my grandfather used one of his CD's for collateral.

Went on to get a BS in Computer Science.

Thanks grandpa! Miss you!

Sears Franklin with 2 5 1/4 floppies and 512K memory in 1985. Was thrilled to upgrade to a 25M HD ($379) and eventually mickey moused in an additional 128K memory.

The demo TRS-80 while still on display at Radio Shack. I was the only proof the thing actually worked.

The first computer I paid for was a pair of derelict RCA Cosmac VIP's. Old demos from the computer store I was working at.

The first serious work done with a computer was my homework from a summer Comp+Lit class. Still working at the same computer store. I would take a C/PM machine and a printer home over the weekend. Get them running properly together on my own time while doing the writing assignments. Win-win! Plus I found a copy of Colossal Caves Adventure....

Now, I teach 14 Windows PC's and a Linux Server to be helpful around the office.

Mine was a radio shack TRS80 model 4 from the 70's/80's. Had to use the bottom drive for the program and the top drive for the saved data. Did not have a hard drive...

GOOGLE IMAGE

Later on they came out with a 5MB Hard drive add-on and we thought we was ruling the world then. I got a printer and couple other items at the same which all total cost around $600...

Took it to a ham fest years later and the highest bid I got was $50 so just brought it home. Still in a box in the garage I think...

The first computer I ever operated was a TRS-80 my Freshman year in high school back in 1979.

The first time I used a computer on the job was when my company issued me a Toshiba laptop in 1994.

The first computer I owned was a Gateway desktop that we purchased in 1999. We paid nearly two grand for it. That was just before the computer market crashed.

Wow, had to really think back on this one:

1- S110 (still have 10 of the buss cards)
2- Timex 1000 (made a memory expansion board for it @ almost $500) probably the first laptop
3- Commodore Vic 20
4- Commodore 64 (memory expansion board, printer, disk drive, games) STILL have it all)
5- IBM Compatible PC (8086 processor - 8Mhx) I built -now a wall clock on my office wall
6- IBM Compatible (I Built) 8088 processor - 10Mhz
7- 286, 386, 486, Pentium....,
8- Box Portable PC with screen (weighed 20lbs) carried that around on many flights
Windows 286 (still have floppy diskettes) first version of windows
(may have been Windows 186, but I believe it was 286)
.... to many more laptops and pc's to list
Favorite operating system is Windows XP (I know it is not supported any longer, but when you interface to sensors and the real analog world, you can't beat it.
I still use a 2001 Toshiba laptop with 512Mb of ram and a 20Gig hardrive for all my micro-controller programming (XP of course)
Do I want Windows 10.. X!$#&^ I hate my Windows 7 laptop and DW's windows 8.1 laptop.
ENJOY!!
