Cooking with a Dutch Oven for the First Time in Several Years

When I was younger, I use to use a Dutch Oven all the time on camping, hunting, and fishing trips. Got away from it till this past weekend and decided to do a lasagna in my 12 inch oven. It was a success and everybody enjoyed it. I just need to figure out on how to deduce the recipe instead cooking enough to feed a family reunion. I also need to learn how to post photos.

Looks Fabulous! I cook with a Dutch Oven about 6 times a year. We commonly use a butch of Dutch Ovens at a time, maybe up to 8

I looked at several recipes and adjusted them the best I could for camping.

The meat sauce

2 1/2 pounds of lean ground beef
2 large yellow onions diced
3 Tablespoons Italian Seasoning
1 Tablespoon of minced garlic
1 large jar of spaghetti sauce
1/2 Med jar of spaghetti sauce

I browned the beef in a 10 in a dutch oven and then added the onion and let them cook until they were translucent. Then I added the garlic and Italian seasoning. After that I added the spaghetti sauce which after bringing to a slow bubble, I set it to the side.

Cheese mixture.

1 each 32 oz and 1 each 8 oz container of ricotta cheese
1 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese.
3 beaten eggs

I just mixed these by hand until they were a uniform consistency.

In a 12 inch dutch oven I put a Lodge paper liner, just to help with clean up.

I first put a layer of meat sauce, then no boil lasagna pasta(these things are great), layer of cheese mixture, 1/4 cup of mozzarella cheese.

On top of this I put about a 1/2 of my meat sauce and then repeated the cheese and pasta.

Repeat the layering one more time.

After my last layer, I topped it with 1 cup of mozzarella.

I put the oven about 5 inches above a ring of charcoal and put a ring of charcoal on the lid.

I cooked it for an hour rotating the lid and oven every 10 minutes.

After an hour I covered the lid with charcoal to brown the cheese on top.

I baked cookies in my cast iron pot last weekend.
We miss having a gas oven in the RV... so had to make something up.

Put a trivet in the pot, and used a tart pan to put the cookie dough on (because it fit), on top of the trivet. Over the campfire it went, and in about 15 minutes fresh, hot COOKIES!

Served with ice cream, of course.
