Handling: A vs. C

Hey Gang,

I know this is going to be a loaded question, but on the Precept line is it safe to assume that they handle 'better' then the Greyhawks? I saw so many Class A's pulling 70 mph going down to Disney, but almost no Class C's doing the same. My rig handles mostly fine in no wind/low wind scenarios, but w/ the 5 speed anything over 65 really gets the engine rpm's up. And I was having a real go of it when I was in gusty 35+mph winds, whereas those Class A's kept on passing me and they weren't swerving w/ the wind like I was.

Gave me a lot of envy ....

???

When we had our 01 DESIGNER (32') I could easily travel 70 without sway, even when towing a GMC Canyon. If you have it loaded properly with proper air pressure and aligned at a truck shop it will handle well. With that said 70 mph was not my norm, 65 was just for safety reasons.

For my 'C' I know I'm aligned well b/c when I have no wind I can do 60 and hover my hands over the wheel and it tracks true. The CAT scales tell me I'm a small amount under both my front and rear axle, so my weight is distributed properly at least as far as front/back is concerned.

At 65 I need to do a little correcting of the steering wheel, at 70 I don't even bother trying as it's getting too loud and warm (doghouse) in the rig to even bother.

Now w/ a cross wind its a totally different story, but the A's did not seem to share my issues.

We just drove to Disney from Dallas in our class c. I had the cruise set on 70-72 the entire time and it was pleasant. We do have a 6 spd tranny so rpms we're in the 2k-2.5k range. I insulated the floors and upgraded the suspension which all helped. We passed a lot of class a coaches.

Higher end suspension helps. You can update that even on your C to handle much better. I also found putting tires on the front with a wider tread helped in crosswinds too. Just figure how much you're willing to spend on better handling and do a full plan up front. It is never fun to keep spending without getting the improvement you were hoping for.

The Greyhawk has some pretty good suspension improvements stock out of the gate. And I did have it aligned prior to purchasing.

The allure of extra cargo, 50 amps (2 ACs) is always the pull for me w/ regards to upgrading down the road. Taking the long 2100 mile round trip to Disney, seeing the A's pass me left and right gave me something else to covet.

The j-ride plus is a good start but a trac bar and steering stabilizer will make a very noticeable difference if you haven't already done that.

I also added a second power saver AC which has been nice to cool the unit a bit quicker on hot days.

I'd love to have class A but I don't think I'm interested in a gas model. I think we'll stick to our C until I can jump to a DP or a Seneca.

We used to rent a class c Redhawk and now own a class a Precept. To me there is not a huge difference in handling. At least not enough to let that make your decision.

Handling Comparison C vs. A

We went from a 2014 Melbourne 29D to a 2017 Precept 31UL. We don't see a big difference in handling but feel that the Precept is a bit better. In any case, we don't see any reason to pursue handling modifications.
