I showed my wife this picture and she said she has seen where people will use those pool noodles tucked inside the fitted sheet on one edge of a bed which tends to put enough of a buffer for kids not to roll off. You may be looking for something higher and more substantial but that's a cheap quick fix. Maybe you could even figure out a way to throw two in there if double stacked (maybe ducked taped together and cut to size) since they can mold to the curve of the mattress.

I second this! Plus the kids like them at the pool!

Bed rails

Toys r us/ babies r us sell portable and foldable rails that have supports that slide under the side of the mattress. We used one as a headboard in our old pop up so the pillows didn’t fall through.

I'm going to try to make something out of PVC piping and see if I can get the perfect angle.

Mine doesn't have the open area on two sides - just an opening on one side.

But this is what I made. The fence looking part will slide up and off the angle brackets to keep my littlest one in and it's hard enough that he can't do it himself. The plywood that the angle brackets are attached to slides under the mattress. Seems heavy enough in testing and add the kids weight on top of it and it shouldn't go anywhere. I can always screw it in at a few spots if needed.

Pretty neat, getting the Angle on mine might be tricky.

Here are some photos of the railing. Top one is fixed bottom one I use it sometimes so it's not really bolted to the plywood.

Made with 1/2 PVC pipe, I heated it up to get the curve then add the Ts after the fact.Click image for larger version
