Has anyone upgraded the light fittings on their RV?

Has anyone replaced the standard "pancake" surface mount light fittings that are common on most Jayco trailers with something a little nicer looking ... or even recessed light fittings? Just wondering ... I think modern or recessed light fittings would really improve the inside of our RVs.

The ceiling isn't very thick. I don't think there is enough room to install recesed lights. I haven't seen modern 12 volt lights. Do you know any web sites selling them?

Hi Tracy,
They are quite hard to find. However, since most halogen and LED lights for the home come with a transformer which outputs 12v, I can probably remove the transformer and connect the fittings directly to the rv wires. I suspect if you look for recessed LED light fittings, they will be pretty thin and may fit into the rv ceiling. Ikea does some relatively cheap lighting solutions such as the DIODER (surface mount) which look better than the standard pancake IMO (but they don't have an integrated switch - not a big deal for me). I would have to go in store to check that they are 12V though - their web page doesn't give enough details.

If you install any recessed lights in the ceiling make SURE that they do not run hot. I would suggest maybe looking at LED recessed lights or recessed lights that have proper clearance so that there's no chance of a fire. We've replaced the "ugly" looking ceiling lights in the dining & lounge area with something like this:

Over the bed we put in a pair of these:

Use your imagination and artistic ability and have fun...
