I built up the cabinet, similarly to how Jayco does it. It is built up really light. To remove the top panel all you need to do is remove 6 screws, 2 of which are securing the black webbing that holds the front mattress in place during traveling. The other four are securing the white “bug guard” at the bunk hinge. I did not install a hinge on the cover. The DW and I talked about adding a hinge, but did decided not to,a s it could be added later if we chose to. We decided that no hinge is the way to go. In the pictures you will see I there are two strips of 1x1 along the decorative cover board, they hold the cover in place. I did have to modify them a little as I recall as I added a stiffener inside the linen at the center.
I lined the whole cabinet with a thin paneling; it is probably less than an 1/8” thick. The bottom is just a few pieces of 1” x 2” If I recall I brad nailed together, as I do not have a pneumatic stapler, which I would have preferred to have used. The hardest part of the whole project was adding a nailing strip to the front wall. To find the wall structure I pulled the wall paneling way from the curved wall (it was not secured at the bottom) and marked where the plywood ribs where located.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
