195 RB Question

We are still working on closing the deal on a 195 RB. The dealer has a 2016 that looks to be in excellent condition. One slight issue on one of the seals around the window but other than that I am not able to find anything wrong with the 2016. He also has a New 2017 on the lot. The differences I have found are the 2017 has a larger black water tank , 19.9 gallons versus 9 gallons on the 2016. The 2017 also has Goodyear tires where the 2016 has the Rainier tires. The new trailer also has the 2 year warranty.

Price difference is about $3600 Canadian dollars (about $2700 U.S.) for the new 2017 versus the used 2016. Questions are, is the 2 year warranty, the Goodyear tires and the larger black water tank worth the extra money.

Most of our camping with be within a 250 mile radius of home and 7 to 10 day stays are what we plan to do with the trailer. Currently no big cross country trips planned but reading some of the adventures others have posted on here you never know !

Thanks,
RDG

I have a 9 gallon tank on mine, and we last 3 days if we are really really careful, we bought a 11 gallon tank on wheels (150$) to be able to get more capacity, the tires are pretty cheap to change, I upgraded mine to 8 plies for about 300$ last year, since the stock 6 plies were overload from the factory. so for the price difference you might upgrade it yourself, but having to haul a separate tank can be a pita sometimes!

we had a choice between a 2015 or a 2016 or 2017. we took the 17. #1 reason was the price. looking at the values a 15 or 16 was considered between one or two years old already. (both were new) so upon leaving the dealers lot we were down more money with the two older rigs even though up front we were saving a little bit of money because they were leftovers. #2 reason was the bigger black tank, that has proved to be invaluable this past summer. (we had a 9 gallon tank in a previous starcraft. #3 was the good year tires on the 17. #4 was we have led running lights and brake and taillights on the 17 , 16 did not have them . so that is what persuaded us to go with the 2017.

Resale value on NADA for a 16 vs a 17 is about $1,900 which will shrink over time but the 17 will always be more valuable in the same condition. Add $300 for tires, possibility of a using the warranty on the new one.
And, of course, the possibility there is hidden problems that you can't see.

I buy cars 3 to 5 years old to save the depreciation value but I don't think they are marking the one year old enough for me to buy it vs new.

Can't speak to the $ value cost benefit aspect, but the black water tank is a big issue. We have the 9 gal on our 145RB and it would be sooooo much better to have the 19.9 gal. We manage with the 9 gal by using it only for nighttime visits - use the park washrooms the rest of the time. Maybe you could change out the tank size on the 2016?

195 rb

Thanks everyone for the responses. I am amazed at all the good information on this forum and people taking their time to share their views and opinions. After a few more days of negotiating with the dealer we were able to close the gap on the 2016 195 RB and the 2017 195 RB from $3600 Canadian down to $2800 plus we are getting a WD hitch installed at half price. Based on that we have pulled the trigger on the 2017 195 RB. As we live in Ontario they agreed to store it for us over the winter so we do not take delivery until the Spring, (but they were good enough to let us pay for it now!)

Thanks again for the input and opinions. I was not aware of the LED lights being updated on the 2017 models and we had not taken into account the difference in resale value. (You never know we may upgrade soon !) The real deal breaker on the 2016 was the 9 gallon black water tank after reading the experience of others with the small tanks.

Congrats on your purchase ..... being a previous 195RB owner , u're going to enjoy it. It is a very popular floorplan here in Ontario .... not many on dealer lots. It is always a difficult decision when trying to decide between 2, when there is a cash difference. Yes, it is nice to own a brand new unit, plus the extra year warranty ..... but, when it comes to resale, condition of RV is more important than year, so either way, you would have done alright. As for the LED lights, i'm on the fence on that one. My brothers new Jayflight was less than 6 months old and the right taillamp only 1/2 worked. It's not going to be.... pop the tail lamp lens off and pop in a new 3157 light bulb anymore, and it's just another case of, it's not jayco who made it, it's from a supplier. As for Ontario winters, you guys keep the snow up there ..... we'll enjoy another green winter here in Windsor!
Maybe we'll run into each other some day campng ..... we enjoy camping at the Pinery
