Anyone towing a 171 Jay Flight Micro with a half ton?

Just wondering some MPG's while pulling the Jayco Micro's

We have a F250 6.7 powerstroke and we pull our 171BH Micro and only get 9-11 mpg's while towing. Funny, in our Jayco WhiteHawk (29BH) we got the exact same towing mpgs...so it got me thinking.

You Ford F150 folks, what kind of mpgs are you getting while towing your Micro's?

Just returned from a trip to the Black Hills. Total mileage around 1500. 2019 F-150 with 3.5 turbo and 2021 166FBS. Average was 9.6 for the trip including about 200 miles without a camper attached. Lowest was about 5.5 with a 30 mile head wind going up hill. best with the camper was about 11 coming home with no wind. Without camper, I average 18-20 depending on speed.

Towing mileage can vary a lot depending on not just driving habits but things like speed, wind and terrain are all compounded when towing. That said you likely won’t see much improvement in a half ton from what you’re currently getting and you might even see a drop in mileage.

When I had my F150 with 3.5 eco I would average about 7-8 mpg towing a 7200 lb travel trailer on pretty level roads without much wind. With a good head wind I was looking at 5-6.

Wind resistance is also a large factor in regards to mileage, so the frontal area of the trailer is part of the equation no matter which model.

Appreciate the notes, was kind of expecting this. I would like to tell you why i was asking. We have been pulling a camper of some sort albiet a bumper pull and 2 35ft 5th wheels over the past 20 years...i think i succumbed to campground BS when talking with other campers telling me they are pulling 26-31 ft bumper pulls with half tons getting 12+ mpgs. I wanted to double check this with real world vs, "have a few step 2's and now talking trash"

I love our set up...the F250 pulls like nothing is there, i can pull at any speed, but we never go over 75. (and yes I have speed rated tires on the camper) but we drive safe...

I just got a little rattled at a few convos when someone told me they were pulling a 7K lb 28ft bumper and getting 14 mpg in a half ton. Maybe at 45 mph. LOL, but not at 70 and not climbing from Dallas to Bentonville AR....its up hill the entire way. LOL

My little 2.7L averages 21mpg when not towing, and pretty much half that, 10.5, when towing. I'm not a speed demon, but I keep up with traffic. Amazing what that tiny engine can do - caught myself yesterday hitting 80 uphill to pass on a short stretch of passing lane on the Oregon coast, and that was towing! I do find that if I don't lock out 8th, 9th, and 10th my mileage drops between 0.5 and 1mpg. Did that on flat ground for experimental purposes.

Same stretch of I-64 running thru Illinois. I get over 1mpg better driving east than west. Illinois is pretty flat.

The on-board mileage on our F150 usually is a little optimistic on MPGs by 1 to 2. I do check the actual figure by trip miles between fill ups, and gallons bought. Like mentioned, pulling a barn door behind us with head, tail, or side winds, and terrain mostly is 9.5 to 11.5 by the receipt gallons. Any MH, you're actually driving the barn door instead of pulling it.

Just got home from a 260 mile round trip to Williams, and return to Kingman. 9 mpg going…up hill; 12 coming home down hill. Equals 10.5 for the trip with my 5.7 Tundra pulling my 6800# trailer. Never exceed 65 mph…usually steady at 60 turning 1800 rpm.

FWIW, our 212QBW is just slightly heavier than your TT and I average about 11.5 mpg with my old 7.3L Powerstroke diesel. Virtually everywhere we go is up and down major mountains, so it ranges from 9 to 13+. I’m happy, considering it’s a 4-speed tranny.

Getting more than 11 means you've got something pushing you. My ecoboast just got 9.5 on 95 in Maine 65 mph pulling our 28ds whitehawk 6k +, didn't expect any more.

Yeah, we installed a V6 in the Jayco and it pushes us up the hills! Nope, nothing pushing us.

It is generally accepted that a diesel will lose less in mileage when towing than a gasser will. The only diesels I've driven have been Semi trucks and Class A pushers, so I don't have a personal frame of reference. I can say I got 8.3mpg pushing a 36000 lb Blue Bird with a Cummins 8.9 ISL. On the other hand I only got 5.3 pushing a 46000 lb Blue Bird with a Detroit 8V96. Both towing a Grand Cherokee, so total weight 40K+ for the one and 50K+ for the other.

thanks for the posts,

My F250 6.7 is paid for, so no reason to trade it for a 150....

that said, just last weekend I was in Bentonville AR for a mtb trip. Saw a super light camper, 29ft in length, being pulled by a Nissan Titan HD. I asked the guy now much his rig weighed and what his MPGs were. He said, he was at 7500 lbs and he was getting 19mpg pulling.

Now I know he is FOS. I was like "really" when he gave me the answer and he doubled down on my question.

The Nissan factory site says a stripped-down Titan with 400 hp manages 18 mpg in combined driving. So, 19 while towing? Um, no. Wonder what else he exaggerates about?

He could have had the older 5.0 Cummins diesel but that would make his mpg closer to half of what he said.

That’s hilarious!

GMC 1500 with the 5.3 V8, former tow rigs were an F150 with 5.0 and an F350 6.7...

With the gassers, about 9.5 mpg (25k/100 km) with a 26' bunkhouse... About half my unloaded mileage.

With the diesel, about a 20% drop in mileage - but a 7000# trailer barely registered on a truck rated for 26,000 lbs - lol

Someone saying they're getting 19 mpg towing is full of crap, to put it bluntly...

I have a 2022 F150 w/ 5.0 3.73 gears and I pull a 2022 Jayco 166FBS, I average 9.5 -10.5 mpg, just depends on the driving conditions.

I have a 2018 F-150 with the same 5.0 3.73 pulling a 183RB BAJA. (~4000lbs) On the first 1500 kms of mostly hilly terrain since we bought this trailer, the fuel meter showed an avg of about 19-20 l/100 kms or about 11.5 - 12.5 mpg (US gals). This is confirmed at fill ups. The 183RB is bit lighter than the 166FBS but maybe similar frontal area.

Our mileage was more like 18/100 kms or 13 mpg with our last trailer, a 145RB BAJA .(~3000 lbs) for more than 10k kms we towed it.
