What is the top switch for? Sounds like a short on the switch. Do you have any test equipment like a vom?

You can pull the cover off, somwtimes there a little hard. It's a bimetal spring that makes contact, my guess it's bent or a screw or other contaminate is keeping it open.

If it's damaged beyond field repair, turn it off for the night. Then if you get up to go to the bathroom turn it on for a few minutes, and then turn it back off when you go back to bed.

Long term replace it with a digital thermastat. You can get one from home Depot type store, you do have to pay attention as not just any thermastat will work with these furnaces. All you are doing is completing the circuit with this thermastat. There is no power feed.

The anticipator, little slide on the top left, may need to be adjusted down as well.

It sounds like the Bi-Metal coil spring was stuck or is binding. Check the mounting screws to see if they are too tight. Something is causing it to bind. You should not have to adjust the brass screw.

Glad to hear you have got it to go off but it probably will happen again if you can't get it to move freely.

Adjusting the anticipator voids the warranty though. Most likely not the anticipator.
