On the front arm there is a lever up by the roller that you have to release to get the awning to roll up. Make sure you are holding on to the strap to control the retraction speed.

Yes there is a spring in at least one end and it broke on one of mine on our 86 Terry and had to roll it up by hand couldnt find a replacement spring due to age so had to carry a 3 foot ladder from then on to roll awning up

Don't know whose awning you have, but if it's a Carefree of Colorado, I believe they have parts for their older units, if it turns out to be the spring. You can contact them on the internet.

My awning is a Carefree of Colorado and had a spring on each end inside the tube. Several years ago, the spring on the one end broke and, like you, I had to roll the awning up by hand. Rather than replace the spring, I purchased the Carefree of Colorado Pioneer Upgrade Kit. In a nutshell, the kit eliminates the springs altogether by converting the awning to the old fashioned "crank-up" system. Personally, I've never been happier since I installed the kit. I no longer have to fight with that silly direction changing lever that always seemed to stick. The worm drive crank mechanism works smoothly, gives me complete control over the unwinding/winding process, eliminates that annoying pull strap and prevents any rolling of the awning once you stop. It allows me to tighten my awning against the trailer much better than the spring method. The installation of the kit basiclly involves removing the spring and replacing the end cap on each end of the awning tube. Carefree recommends two people to do the job but I was able to do it myself.

The upgrade kit is compatible with 1997 and newer Carefree Spirit, Fiesta and Simplicity awnings.

Crank up sounds right to me. Automatic equipment usualy means automatic problems.
I'll see about that fix. thanks....

Try rvawningrepairs.com It was still active November/2013. You had a typo in your URL address.
